High School Programming Enrollment/Staffing/Space Challenges New Schedule Facility Contingency Board of Education 2015 Executive Work Session

Dobyns-Bennett High School Enrollment/Staff Information Current Enrollment 2,185 (includes DBE) Added 1 SS, 1 math, 1 media specialist and hope to transition writing center position to a student support advocate. Total Staff per Dept.  8.5 Art  19 CTE  18 English  23 math  14 Science  10 SPED  18 SS  11 Wellness (including 2 ROTC)  9 World Language

Dobyns-Bennett High School Enrollment/Staff Information Staff Continued  5 Assistant Principals (440:1 ratio)  1 Athletic Director  1 CTE Director  5 Counselors (440:1 ratio – National recs are 250:1)  1 Testing Coordinator  1 Career Counselor  As of right now it looks like we will have 14 teachers on a cart. The writing center and repurposing the “old” ROTC area created a domino effect that shifted this number down from 18.

Dobyns-Bennett High School Enrollment/Staff Information Class Averages  English 9 CP – 23  English 10-12CP/PreAP – 26  Eng 11 AP – 22  English 12 AP – 28 PM/16 AM (band effect)  Alg 1 – 22  Alg 2/Geom – 25  Trig/PreCal – 27  Stats – 28

Dobyns-Bennett High School Enrollment/Staff Information Class Averages  Well I - 29  Well II – 32  Biology/Chem – 26  World and US History – 25  Government and Econ/Personal Finance – 28  French I/II – 37 (max is 35 and our classes hold 30 – removed 14 students from taking this language)  Spanish I/II – 34 (max is 35 and our classes hold 30 – removed 34 students from taking this language)  Latin I/II – 22  German I/II – 25  Mandarin I/II – 10 (have really tried to encourage this course but it is really being used more as a 2 nd World Language)

Dobyns-Bennett High School Enrollment/Staff Information We do not have a contingency plan, other than DBE, at this point if a Science/Tech wing doesn’t open. Once we use the “old” ROTC space, we no longer have significant unused space. We have one CTE room we are using as a multi-purpose lab. Otherwise, all space is being used.

Tribe Time minute period of time Time will be used for lunch, tutoring/intervention and enrichment. Teachers will supervise, tutor, conference, etc., on a rotational basis. Counselors will be available during the entire hour. All teachers will be in the rotation to support supervision, tutoring or enrichment. Initial focus will be tutoring but we will expand options and opportunities as comfort and familiarity increase. Most students will have a menu of options. Highest need students will be assigned to minute intervention /tutoring groups.

Tribe Time Students will have the following options for eating: ▫All academic pods ▫Cafeteria ▫Main CTE lobby ▫Possibly Instrumental Music Building ▫ROTC ▫Theater/Activities Lobby ▫Activities, Band and Cafeteria Patio ▫All areas supervised as well as parking lots

Tribe Time The cafeteria will remain the main hub for getting food. A couple of lines have been repurposed. The cafeteria can accommodate 600 (though not comfortably) We will have food kiosks set up in the upper level of the theater, activities lobby and at this time the CTE lobby. We are rethinking the CTE option but space is also an issue for kiosks (egress/fire marshal) and we need at least three alternate locations. The planning of this endeavor started with the expectation of carpet removal. That is no longer happening for two years. We are having to rethink menu options throughout the building due to the preservation of the carpet, healthy eating spaces for students and overall cleanliness and presentation.

Tribe Time We currently have committees in place working on: ▫Supervision location and rotations ▫Tutoring schedules ▫Intervention plans ▫Menu options
