LEVEL UP!! Elizabeth (Betsy) Hancock Elementary DAEP Houston Independent School District AN INTRODUCTION TO PROGRAMMING USING MAZES

WHAT IS LEVEL UP!! Stencyl-based programming Uses downloadable freeware and games Uses simple programming language to modify and create games Stair-steps the learning and creation process

WHAT IS STENCYL?  An intuitive game creation software  Drag-and-drop designer  Logic is created simply by snapping blocks together  As user advances, more complex behaviors and codes can be created  Publishes to all the major platforms without code

WHY LEVEL UP!!  Created for use with elementary students in a disciplinary setting  Typically students have been denied access to computer ancillary periods and programs because of behavior, leaving a deficit in digital knowledge  Students may find they enjoy programming and using programs  With encouragement, administrators may find that students spend less time in the office due to behavior  Students may want to stay out of trouble so they can continue to  Work with Stencyl to create their own games  Learn new programs to further their knowledge and abilities

LEVEL UP!! First three levels are completely built mazes; additional levels require the student to add elements Level 4: Students add two actors, one each in different layers Level 5: Students add two actors; both requiring customization Level 6: Students add all actors and customizations in correct layers Level 7: Students add all maze components except for base tiles Level 8: Students build complete level, including adding and linkage to next scene
