Engineering

Engineering "The creative application of scientific principles to design or develop structures, machines, apparatus, or manufacturing processes, or works utilizing them singly or in combination; or to construct or operate the same with full cognizance of their design; or to forecast their behavior under specific operating conditions; all as respects an intended function, economics of operation and safety to life and property." [ [

What is IE/OR ?? n Industrial Engineering (IE) is concerned with the design, improvement and installation of integrated systems of people, materials, information, equipment and energy. n Operations Research (OR) is concerned with the development of mathematical models, statistics, and algorithms for predicting system behavior and optimizing system performance. n Together they provide a viable, effective and enriching degree experience and career path.

What did I say???? Industrial Engineering is: Industrial Engineering is:

IE/OR at Umass Amherst n Industrial Engineering and Operations Research (IE/OR) is an ABET accredited engineering degree program at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Massachusetts. n It is one of the five engineering degree programs at the University. There is also a Masters and Ph.D. program in IE/OR.

General Information n An ABET accredited program granting bachelor’s, master’s, and Ph.D degrees each year. n Last year ( ) we graduated around 10 BSc. degrees,5 MSc. degrees and 3 Ph.D’s. n There are five IE/OR faculty in the MIE Department Erin Baker, Ph.D. Stanford UniversityErin Baker, Ph.D. Stanford University Donald Fisher, Ph.D. University of Michigan, Ann ArborDonald Fisher, Ph.D. University of Michigan, Ann Arbor Jenna Marquardt, Ph.D University of Wisconsin, MadisonJenna Marquardt, Ph.D University of Wisconsin, Madison Ana Muriel, Ph.D. Northwestern UniversityAna Muriel, Ph.D. Northwestern University James MacGregor Smith, Ph.D. University of Illinois, Urbana.James MacGregor Smith, Ph.D. University of Illinois, Urbana. n Within the IE/OR context our graduates work in such areas as:

IE/OR Career areas IE/OR graduates are frequently employed in other non-factory areas such as: IE/OR graduates are frequently employed in other non-factory areas such as: n Quality Control n Materials Handling n Plant Layout n Engineering Economy n Job Evaluation n Systems Analysis n Simulation Modeling n Methods Improvement n Project Management n Production Control n Safety Engineering n Project Design n Inventory Systems n Information Systems n Data Processing n Ergonomics n Human Factors n Scheduling

IE/OR Related Career Tracks n Traffic Engineering and Safety n Environmental Engineering n Urban Planning n Air and Water Pollution Systems n Project Management/Scheduling n Hospital Systems n Transportation Systems n Food Processing n Computer Consulting and Systems

Department History n The IE Program was organized in the Fall of 1950 as part of Mechanical Engineering. n In 1962, degree of BSc. in IE and MSc. were established by the Board of Trustees. n In 1965, the IE program was established as a separate degree program and in 1966, Umass became the first institution in New England to offer a Ph.D program in IE. n In 1971, the Department title and degrees were changed from Industrial Engineering to Industrial Engineering and Operations Research (IE/OR). n In 1995, the Department was merged again with Mechanical Engineering.

Qualities of an IE/OR graduate n The IE/OR graduate combines the aptitude of the engineer, accountant and business executive. One should be interested in people and in the machines of industry and society, but above all, one should have an interest in creatively solving problems. n This ability to solve problems includes defining the problem, gathering data, and taking action on the best solution. n Many times the IE is the team leader in their company n One should be able to express their ideas in a clear concise manner either verbally or in writing. Last but not least, one should have an aptitude for studying mathematics, economics, industrial management, and computer science.

Dawn Woods, '87(BSc.)/ '89(MSc.) n ``I work for the Army (US Army Natick Soldier Research Development and Engineering Center), applying Human Factors Engineering to Military aerial delivery equipment, clothing & protective equipment, food and food service equipment; tents and shelters; and many other items. n ``I work for the Army (US Army Natick Soldier Research Development and Engineering Center), applying Human Factors Engineering to Military aerial delivery equipment, clothing & protective equipment, food and food service equipment; tents and shelters; and many other items. n However, I use more than just my Human Factors training. I also need my background in systems engineering, facility layout and design, cost accounting, scheduling, and a host of other IE/OR topic areas to be effective at my job. I use the education I received at Umass,IE/OR everyday. IE/OR gave me the solid base upon which I first learned to do my job, and now excel at it.’’

Arnold Most – IE class of ‘64 n I had a great career in IBM. I utilized my skills as an IE in both the Engineering and Management of IBM’s production of semi-conductors. I also worked as an IBM consultanting engineer to helping their client customers manufacture more efficiently n After I retired from IBM I put my IE skills to work helping manufacturers throughout the Hudson Valley manufacture more efficiently and therefore be able to provide jobs for Hudson Valley residents.
