Mark

Title: 1. English – The Gospel According to Mark 2. Greek – kata. Ma,rkon

Author: John Mark

Date of Writing: A.D.

Theme: Jesus as the Son of God

Purpose of Writing: Mark’s task is to present Jesus to a largely Gentile audience. Most scholars believe that Mark was in Rome when he wrote the gospel and that his audience was a largely Roman (Gentile) Christian community.

Elements of Mark’s “Roman” Gospel: 1. Mark omits “Hebrewisms” - Genealogies, the Law, etc. 2. Mark translates Aramaic words 3. Mark uses Roman terms, expressions

Christ in Mark: 1. Jesus as the Son of God 2. Jesus as the Active Servant

Jesus as the Son of God Mark 1:1 The gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Mark 1:11 And a voice came from heaven, "You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased."

Mark 2:24, The Pharisees were saying to Him, "Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath” 27 Jesus said to them, "The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. 28 So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath." Mark 7:18-19 And He said to them, "Are you so lacking in understanding also? Do you not understand that whatever goes into the man from outside cannot defile him, 19 because it does not go into his heart, but into his stomach, and is eliminated?" (Thus He declared all foods clean.) Mark 12:24-25 Jesus said to them, "Is this not the reason you are mistaken, that you do not understand the Scriptures or the power of God? 25 "For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven.

Mark 11:15,17 And He entered the temple and began to drive out those who were buying and selling in the temple.... And He began to teach and say to them, “Is it not written, 'MY HOUSE SHALL BE CALLED A HOUSE OF PRAYER FOR ALL THE NATIONS'?”

euvq u.j = immediately Mark 1:41 Moved with compassion, Jesus stretched out His hand and touched him, and said to him, "I am willing; be cleansed." Mark 6:34 [Jesus] saw a large crowd, and He felt compassion for them because they were like sheep without a shepherd.

The Healings The Feedings

The Crucifixion

Place in the Canon: Historically, Mark gives us an insight into the life and times of Jesus. Theologically, Mark demonstrates Jesus’ unique identity and mission. Devotionally, we are led to take Jesus as our Savior and king, who is to be trusted, loved, worshiped and obeyed.
