THE IMPORTANCE OF ESR Component Engineers often specify crystals based on the data supplied by semiconductor manufacturers. While the data is usually accurate it can result in less than satisfactory results. The selection of the optimum crystal for any design is influenced by several different parameters. A significant parameter is the physical dimension. A difficulty here is that in general a crystal’s package size and ESR are linked; the smaller the package, the higher the crystal ESR in general. Oscillator circuits utilizing high ESR crystals require careful design to allow for use with a low drive current. Some of the more popular simple oscillator circuits can refuse to start oscillation if a crystal with too high an ESR is employed. Many chipsets use noise generation within the chipset to drive the crystal; this may not always be a constant level and is very often an unmeasured parameter. The problem may be further compounded if the chipset manufacturer has used a larger sized, lower ESR crystal on which to base his design, but then propose customers use ‘any’ crystal. This can result in unreliability, caused by batch variation failures - there will be an optimum ESR for any circuit and if this optimum happens to fall within the middle of a crystal batch spread then a percentage of the crystals may fail - the circuit having insufficient gain to drive the higher ESR crystals.
