Genesis Chapter 14 Union Church Bible Study

Redacted Means edited We are reading edited Scriptures in our Bibles Changes were minor Dead Sea Scrolls written starting 50 BC, last ones written AD 70 Most changes were about spelling, or name or city names due to language evolution

Oldest Hebrew OT created in AD 900’s Dead Sea Scroll find was of 1000 years older Hebrew OT documents! No Change over that 1000 years Septuagint = 1 st translation of Hebrew OT to another language Greek 250 BC Difficult to translate thoughts of one culture to another

New results from Dead Sea Scrolls show many phrases and theologies or the NT were already under development Before Yeshua! We will correlate the OT, NT, and DSS What the words meant to the people at that time are the key, because it should mean the same thing to us

Genesis 14:1-2 1 And it came to pass in the days of Amraphel king of Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of nations; 2 That these made war with Bera king of Sodom, and with Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, and Shemeber king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela, which is Zoar.

Chedorlaomer and his allies

Kings of the distruct in rebellion: Bera, Birsha, Shinab, Shem-eber, ruler of Zoar Paid tribute for 12 years Rebelled in the 13 th year Fought in the Valley of Siddim, now part of the Dead Sea Dead Sea = Salt Sea Dead Sea in 2 parts, north and south King’s Highway

Genesis 14:3-4 3 All these were joined together in the vale of Siddim, which is the salt sea. 4 Twelve years they served Chedorlaomer, and in the thirteenth year they rebelled.

Genesis 14:5-6 5 And in the fourteenth year came Chedorlaomer, and the kings that were with him, and smote the Rephaims in Ashteroth Karnaim, and the Zuzims in Ham, and the Emims in Shaveh Kiriathaim, 6 And the Horites in their mount Seir, unto Elparan, which is by the wilderness.

Rephaim, Zuzim, and Emim Likely not tribes Identified with the Nephilim Fallen Angels that mated with human females Horites, Amelikites, Amorites are known tribes

Genesis 14:7 And they returned, and came to Enmishpat, which is Kadesh, and smote all the country of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites, that dwelt in Hazezontamar.

Genesis 14:8-9 8 And there went out the king of Sodom, and the king of Gomorrah, and the king of Admah, and the king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (the same is Zoar;) and they joined battle with them in the vale of Siddim; 9 With Chedorlaomer the king of Elam, and with Tidal king of nations, and Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch king of Ellasar; four kings with five.

Chedorlaomer and his allies

Genesis 14: And the vale of Siddim was full of slimepits; and the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, and fell there; and they that remained fled to the mountain. 11 And they took all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all their victuals, and went their way. 12 And they took Lot, Abram’s brother’s son, who dwelt in Sodom, and his goods, and departed.

Battle in the Valley of Siddim Lot is taken Abraham takes 318 men to free Lot

Genesis 14: And there came one that had escaped, and told Abram the Hebrew; for he dwelt in the plain of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol, and brother of Aner: and these were confederate with Abram. 14 And when Abram heard that his brother was taken captive, he armed his trained servants, born in his own house, three hundred and eighteen, and pursued them unto Dan.

Abraham Pursues The Kings Catches up at the future place called Damascus Land of Dan (tribe of Israel 600 years later) Night-time surprise attack, Lot rescued, booty retaken Abraham returns to a rousing welcome

Genesis 14: And he divided himself against them, he and his servants, by night, and smote them, and pursued them unto Hobah, which is on the left hand of Damascus. 16 And he brought back all the goods, and also brought again his brother Lot, and his goods, and the women also, and the people.

Genesis 14:17 And the king of Sodom went out to meet him after his return from the slaughter of Chedorlaomer, and of the kings that were with him, at the valley of Shaveh, which is the king’s dale.

Genesis 14: And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God. 19 And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth: 20 And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.

Bread and Wine Law of First Mention – profound significance Matt 26:26 Jesus identifies bread as His Body (Type) Matt 26:28 Jesus identifies wine as His Blood (Type) Gen 40:1-4 Baker and Wine Steward are put in jail with Joseph – dreams with three days etc. Boaz offers bread and wine to Ruth (Ruth 2:14) Ecc 9:7 eat bread with joy, drink wine with a merry heart Isa 36:17 Israel is the “land of bread and vineyards” Passover meal – bread and wine Melchizedek and the patriarchs may have understood the doctrine of atonement

Melchizedek King of Shalem Melchizedek a king and a high priest Worships El Elyon (God Most High) King of Sodom also greets Abraham Melchizedek is probably a title not a name “names” of God El Elyon, El shaddai, God of Heavenly Hosts… all of these are “reputations”

Melchizedek = King of Righteousness Hebrews 7:1-7 Parallels drawn between Melchizedek and Yeshua Some say Melchizedek may have been Shem, son of Noah … Shem was still alive at this time Shem the “line of good” from Noah

Paul's scholarship is well known even to the Jews. Jewish Yeshivas' or schools teach Paul’s writings to gain understanding. They admire Paul’s ability to teach and to write. Paul had a great effect on Jews and Christians. Paul teaches the relationship of Jews and Christians Paul – Hebrews 7:1-28 Rhyme in Yeshivas’: Roses are reddish, Violets are bluish, If it wasn’t for Paul We would all be Jewish

Genesis 14:21 And the king of Sodom said unto Abram, Give me the persons, and take the goods to thyself.

Genesis 14:22 22 And Abram said to the king of Sodom, I have lift up mine hand unto the LORD, the most high God, the possessor of heaven and earth, 23 That I will not take from a thread even to a shoelatchet, and that I will not take any thing that is thine, lest thou shouldest say, I have made Abram rich: 24 Save only that which the young men have eaten, and the portion of the men which went with me, Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre; let them take their portion.
