A good practice: an Erasmus Mundus joint programme with EU and non-EU partners Leopold Kögler ECCE Mundus Seminar on Joint programmes in Soft Sciences, 28 February – 1 March 2013 in Bratislava, Slovakia

„Global Studies – A European Perspective“ (EMGS) Erasmus Mundus I Master Programme since 2005 Erasmus Mundus II – Prolongation with the 2009 call 5 European Partner Universities: University of Leipzig (head of Consortium) London School of Economics University of Wroclaw University of Roskilde (since 2009) University of Vienna

Our Non European Partner Universities: University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB) University of Dalhousie, Canada University of Stellenbosch, South Africa Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia Fudan University in Shanghai, China (since 2009) Nehru University in Delhi, India (since 2009)

EMGS – The Course Duration: 2 years Up to 100 students per year (in all 5 Universities) Internet: EMGS Main HP Degree: MA (double and/or Joint Degree) MSC (double with the LSE)

EMGS – Mobility First Year: The student stays for the first and second semester in one of the 5 EU Partner Universities. In between the whole student body meats for a Winter School in December After the First Year they meet again for a Summer School in July Second Year: Two Possibilities 1st:Student stays for the third and fourth in one of the other 5 European Universities 2nd:Student stays for the third semester in one of our Non-Eu Partner Universities and studies the forth semester in one of the other EU- Partner Universities.

EMGS – How are we organizing it? Cooperation Agreements between all the Partner Universities We award Joint degree and double degree – depending on the national laws. Our Consortium meets at least twice a year – Summer and Winter School to discuss the development of the course program, administrative issues and to have extensive feed-back sessions with the students. Boards for Student selection and exam-regulations Board for Curriculum-Development (together with Non EU-Partner Universities). Advisory Board including our associated partners - like companies, research institutes etc. Promotion through Website, partner universities.

EMGS – What is to do? Payment of Grants is administrated and coordinated from our Consortium Leader, University of Leipzig and paid to the students after the EU-regulations. All European Partner Universities have coordination offices for scientific and administrative coordination. Our team at the University of Vienna has a close cooperation with the International office, but offers much more additional service to the incoming students and Scholars, which would not be possible to be offered by the International office. The service includes: housing, course registration, enrolment, city registration, opening bank accounts, help with Visa and residence permit issues, pick-up service by their arrival, arrangement for social activities, person who they can reach in emergency cases 24hours

EMGS – Selfpaying students? Our Master Course is 5100€ for Non EU students and 3600,-€ for European Students. Fee Waiver Policy – created a transparent application and selection process for Fee Waiver. Excellent students who could not afford studying this MC without a scholarship are offered reduction of fees. Numbers: From 73 students we enrolled this last semester, we could offer only 16 Scholarships. We try to help and assist the students to apply for other funding possibilities by State programs, International Organizations, Higher Education Funding Possibilities.

EMGS – Development in the Future? We had in the last years a lot more applications then study places. Reasons for this situation: Promotion of the Erasmus Mundus Programs by the EU. Our Master Course has become more recognized. Field of Global Studies is becoming more and more popular. Very important is the constant Evaluation by our students and also from our partners to improve the program. Alumni founded an own EMGS – Alumni Association to stay connected and also organize events like Alumni Conventions and Conferences. Negotiation with possible new Non-EU-Partner Universities.

EMGS – Facts & Figures in Vienna In Vienna we started in 2005 with 6 Students who received an EU- grant. At the moment we have 33 students in Vienna – 16 1st year students (4 grants & 12 self paying) 17 2nd year students (5 grants & 12 self paying) EMGS is integrated into the Master Global Studies and Global History. Vienna will host this years Graduation Ceremony and the 3rd EMGS Alumni Meeting. Since 2005 more then 100 student have finished the Program just at the University of Vienna.
