Lexile Framework at Rocky Mountain Middle School

What is a Lexile Measure? There a two types of Lexile Measures: 1) Text Measure: Represents a text’s difficulty based on the Lexile scale. The difficulty is based on vocabulary and sentence complexity. 2) Reader Measure: Represents a person’s reading ability on the Lexile scale. When used together, they can help a reader choose a book or other reading material that is at an appropriate difficulty level.

Lexile Measure vs Grade Level Grade level reading measures are based on averages. Lexile Measures are individualized to the student. * The Lexile Framework for reading is intended to match texts to the level of the reader, not just based on grade level. It is important to note that the Lexile Measure of a book refers to its text difficulty only. A Lexile measure does not address the content or quality of the book or text.

Lexile Framework Chosen by the Common Core Working with the Common Core State Standards Initiative, Lexile helped establish the “reading bands” for each grade level. So, Lexile is alligned with the goals of the Common Core. Lexile is not an instructional program, rather a tool to be used by teachers when planning curriculum.

Lexile Measures at RMMS The library at RMMS has been Lexiled. (Books have a lexile number on the inside cover of each book.) Each student was trained during library orientation about the Lexile Measure and why it is important to stretch and read in their Lexile Band. Each student at RMMS is given the SRI (Scholastic Reading Inventory) to establish a Lexile score. Parents were sent home a letter indicating their students Lexile score, what a Lexile score is, and strategies to help their middle school age student read at home.

Lexile Measures at RMMS School Wide Goals: * The English Department has set a goal to have each student read one book in their Lexile band. * During PLC meeting each department is working with Mrs. Porter to implement the new Language Arts Common Core, and in that discussion teachers analyze the Lexile of current curriculum and work on differentiation.
