2015 Common Read

A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier Common Read A Long Way Gone was selected as our 2015 Common Read. All incoming freshmen will receive a copy of the book during orientation. We ask they read it prior to returning to campus for start of Fall semester.

Purpose Support College Goals – Diversity – Student Engagement – Global Awareness Provides Common Experience for First Year Students Builds Community – Between students, faculty and staff Helps Students Make Connections – Between in-class and out-of-class experiences Engages Students – Discussion of issues across disciplines

About the book Story of Civil War in Sierra Leone during 1990s. First person perspective of boy soldier during war and rehab after the war Coming of age story about family, identity, trust, survival, violence, social justice, morality, and hope.

Other Information Ishmael Beah will visit campus as Mills Distinguished Lecturer on September 23 rd. Related Programming will occur during Fall semester Books are available at Red Dragon Bookstore with College ID
