Crossroads Mission Statement: Our mission at Crossroads Middle School is to form a partnership between our school and community that nurtures and inspires life-long learners through a balanced program of academic excellence and social, emotional, cultural and physical development within a safe and caring environment during this “crossroads” in our students’ lives.

“Seek first to understand, then to be understood.” ~Stephen Covey

Can you say with confidence that ALL of your students... have shared something personal with you and/or class? can name everyone in their class? know and practice classroom routines? have participated in a community building activity within the past two weeks? exhibit self-control without teacher intervention? are comfortable enough to participate in class consistently and are willing to take risks? make good choices without extrinsic rewards? routinely use reflection as a tool to learn from behavior and improve academic achievement? have a trusting relationship with at least one adult in our school? THINK: How would you answer these as applied to us, as an adult learning community?

How are these achievable? DEVELOPMENTAL DESIGNS™ … Is a researched-based approach to teaching that is based upon the belief that building community with intention and supporting social and emotional growth enhance academic achievement.

6 Principles of Developmental Designs™  Social learning is as important to success as academic learning. 2. We learn best by constructing our own understanding through exploration, discovery, and application. 3. The greatest cognitive growth occurs through social interactions within a supportive community. 4. There is a set of personal/social skills that students need to learn and practice in order to be successful socially and academically: Cooperation, Assertion, Responsibility, Empathy, and Self-control 5. Knowing the physical, emotional, social, and intellectual needs of the students we teach is as important as knowing the content we teach. 6. Trust among adults is a fundamental necessity for academic and social success in a learning community.
