THE SNOW QUEEN SCENE BY SCENE By Marlena B

THE SNOW QUEEN SCENES Throughout the book The Snow Queen, there are many different scenes that the main character, Gerda, goes through. This is a result of her being on a journey to find her friend, Kai, who was captured by the Snow Queen.

THE ROOF GARDEN In the big city where Gerda and Kai lived in, their families lived in the attics of two adjoining houses. Between the attics, outside of two opposite windows each facing the other house, they had a large wooden box, where they planted all sorts of flowers and plants. Gerda and Kai always would play there together and admire all the plants, especially the roses. Then, Kai is captured by the snow queen.

THE WITCH’S FLOWER GARDEN After sailing a boat accidentally down the river in search of Kai, Gerda comes apon a beautiful house with an amazing flower garden. Gerda stops by and the old woman inside is so very nice, she decides to stay for a little. While Gerda isn’t watching the woman, who turns out to be a nice witch, gets rid of all the roses in her garden so as to not remind Gerda of her ones back home. Gerda stays many months there and doesn’t notice, until one day she notices a rose painted on the woman’s hat, and remembers Kai and sets off to find him again.

THE CASTLE On her journey, Gerda comes across a crow and asks for assistance. He tells her of seeing a young man who looked like Kai. The young man came to the nearby castle in pursuit of the Princess there, who was looking for a husband. The young man seemed so at home in the castle that the Princess decided to marry him. Gerda and the crow go too see if it is Kai, but it turns out not to be. But, the Prince and Princess give Gerda a golden coach to ride in and help to find Kai.

THE ROBBERS Soon on her ride in the stage coach, the coach is robbed. Among the robbers, Gerda meets a robber girl. The girl listens to her story and is kind. Two of the girl’s doves say that they know that a woman from Lappland or Finnmark would know where the Snow Queen’s castle is. So the robber girl gives Gerda her reindeer to ride on nad sends her off.

THE SNOW QUEEN’S PALACE After visiting first a Lapp woman and then a Finn woman, Gerda rides the reindeer and then walks to the Snow Queen’s palace. There she finds Kai, but he doesn’t recognize her because of splinters of an evil mirror in his eye and heart. She cries on him and the tears wash away the splinters and he recognizes her. Then, the pieces of ice Kai was building into a puzzle happily arrange themselves into the word the Snow Queen said would earn Kai’s freedom, eternity.
