Presentation transcript:

Why should a cardiology fellow get in the field of iCMR ? Mounir RIAHI, MD. Montreal Heart Institute at Interventional cardiac magnetic resonance workshop, SCMR 2014.

Interventional cardiology has entered a new era: – Structural acquired heart disease. – Congenital heart disease. While device development is increasing. Imaging is still lagging behind. Clinical outcomes are good but can be improved with better guidance and real-time functional assessment.

Do no harm Picano, E. Heart 2010;96:269e274.

Do no harm As a clinician entering the field of structural intervention, i have several concerns: – Patient safety: radiation (specially pediatrics and congenital). – Personal Safety: Radiation (e.g. cerebral neoplasia). Musculoskeletal injury (lead aprons). Picano E, European Heart Journal (2006) 27, 2703–2708

Aim for better Tissue characterization and soft tissue contrast. Per-procedural functional assessment. Multiplanar imaging : better 3D representation. * ** *: **: www3.gehealthcare.com/

On a more personal level Exciting field combining: – Intellectual skills (Physics). – Technical skills. Large potential for R&D – Hardware. – Software.
