Computer Lab – How to Use the Computer Lab By Karen Ferns

Group Members Karen Ferns, Terra Vista Elementary, Computer Lab Cindy Hills, East Heritage Elementary, Computer Lab

Let’s Get Started Computer Lab rules during the first visit to the lab. No food or drink in the Lab. Rules for saving. Rules for printing. Condition of the lab when your time is done. Check the board, or ask your teacher, what is the program that will be used for the day. Sit in your assigned seat, click into the appropriate program.

Accelerated And Star Reader Double click the Accelerated or Star Reader icon. Click on your teacher name, click on your name, and type your first initial of your first and last name for the password. When using Star, your teacher will need to enter a “monitor password.” When using Accelerated Reader, type the first few words of the book title, select the test you want to take, click OK. The computer will ask you if you want to take this quiz, answer yes. Carefully read the questions, type the right answer choice, and then press enter. Use the keyboard when taking a Star test instead of the mouse.

Technology Projects There are three technology projects a year. The first project will be completed by November. The second project will be due in January, and the third project in March. Teachers will decide which projects your class will be completing. Projects will include the use of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. Drawing programs will also be used.

Saving to the (L:) Drive Technology projects will be saved to the (L:) drive. To save a project in progress or a finished project: Click File – Save (Click OK when Reminder! appears). Click the drop down arrow on Save In. Click on “Gradelevel on ** (L:), then double click your grade, your teacher, the correct project, then type your name in the “File Name” box and click save.

Using United Streaming United streaming can be used to find interesting facts, video clips, clip art, and much more! See sample video clip:

Fun Facts Computers are used in almost all professions. Learning how to type properly will help you to get your work done faster than hunting and pecking the keyboard! Kids that were born in and after the mid 1980’s are better on computers than most adults that were born in the 1940’s.

What Did You Learn? Are you allowed to come to the Computer Lab and do whatever you want and sit wherever you want? How do I get into Accelerated and Star Reader and take tests? How many technology projects do students do a year? How do I save to the (L:) drive? Who is most likely to be comfortable with a computer – a 12 year old, or a 70 year old?
