Almost all animals have a tube-type digestive system in which food enters the mouth and passes through a long tube. The smooth muscle in the walls of the tube-shaped digestive organs, rhythmically and efficiently moves the food through the system, where it is broken down into tiny absorbable atoms and molecules.

1. An adult esophagus ranges from 10 to 14 inches in length, and 1 inch in diameter. 2. We produce 500 ml of saliva a day 3. It takes your mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, gallbladder, pancreas and liver just to digest a glass of milk 4. Food stays in your stomach for 2 to 3 hours. 5. The liver is the largest organ in the body and performs more than 500 functions. What is a esophagus? A esophagus is the tube that carries food.

Digestion is important for breaking down food into nutrients, which the body uses for energy, growth, and cell repair. Food and drink must be changed into smaller molecules of nutrients before the blood absorbs them and carries them to cells throughout the body. The body breaks down nutrients from food and drink into carbohydrates, protein, fats, and vitamins.
