Growth of Cities: Immigration

Where are the Immigrants coming from? Before 1885 immigrants came mostly from Northern and Western Europe. After 1885 immigrants came mostly from Southern and Eastern parts of Europe. Countries include: Italy, Poland, Greece, Russia, Hungary, China, Japan, Korea, India, Philippines

Why did millions of immigrants decide to make the difficult journey to the United States? Push Factors- Conditions that drive people from their homes. –Pogroms- organized attacks on Jewish communities in Russia

Pull Factors- Conditions that attract immigrants to a new area. Why did millions of immigrants decide to make the difficult journey to the United States?

Where did the voyage end for most immigrants? On the east coast, the voyage ended at Ellis Island, NY for most European immigrants. On the west coast, however, the voyage for Asian immigrants coming to America ended at Angel Island, San Francisco.

Ellis Island, NY

Angel Island, San Francisco "Ellis Island of the West", Designed control the flow of Chinese into the country, who were officially not welcome with the passage of the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 This facility was primarily a detention center.

What problems did most “new immigrants” face in adapting to American Life? Most immigrants stayed in cities and settled in neighborhoods with “like” immigrants. Large American cities became a patchwork of Italian, Irish, Polish, Hungarian, Greek, German, Jewish, and Chinese neighborhoods. Acculturation- Process of holding onto older traditions while adapting to a new culture

Why were some Americans opposed to increased immigration? Nativists sought to limit immigration & preserve the country for native born white Protestants. They argued new immigrants wouldn’t fit into U.S. culture as they were too different or took low paying jobs.

Chinese Exclusion Act in 1882 was an act that barred Chinese Laborers from entering the country. This action was an example of the nativist feeling in the United States. Why were some Americans opposed to increased immigration?
