SHIRLEY RAY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

HISTORY Shirley Ray's Bio  Shirley Corrine Ray was born in Selma, Alabama on July 22, Nurturing and mentoring became a way of life for Shirley, as she exemplified the importance of community involvement and helping your fellow man. She graduated from Commerce High School in Detroit in She attended Wayne State University and later graduated from Oakland University with a degree in Accounting.  At the Internal Revenue Service she held position as Revenue Agent, Revenue Agent Group Manager, and Equal Opportunity Officer. She was a classroom instructor and often taught tax classes during VITA season as well as working as a VITA volunteer. She was involved in the formation of the Michigan Chapter of AIM-IRS where she served on the Board of Directors for many years. She served as the first National Executive Secretary of AIM-IRS She provided resources to help AIM members and encourage minority employees to use AIM to further their career goals. Shirley worked tirelessly, and in her unusual supportive way, she used it to help family members, co-workers, and others reach their goals.

HISTORY  After retirement, Shirley immediately decided to pursue her dream project. Recognizing a need for disadvantage children to have computers in their homes, Shirley would purchase new computers out of her own pocket and donate them to children who demonstrated a need but couldn't afford one. She worked with TechTown restoring donated computers and distributing them to inner city children.  The Shirley Ray Scholarship was established in 2012 to acknowledged Shirley’s strong commitment to education of inner city youth, Community outreach and AIM. Her leadership in Detroit led to other chapters taking the torch and establishing similar partnerships educate to inner city youth on computer skills.

CRITERIA  AIM members and their immediate family can apply for the scholarship,if they meet the following criteria:  The applicant must be or will be enrolled in an accredited college/ university or trade school for the year in which they are applying.  The applicant must have an overall GPA of 2.5 or higher and must provide current transcripts from the school that they are attending.  The applicant must have participated in a recent AIM activity or a community service project  The applicant must complete an essay on the topic included in application in 500 words or less.  The application must be typewritten and postmarked by the due date specified.  Handwritten or late application will not be considered.  The applicant or immediate family member must be a current member of AIM or a spouse, child or grandchild. Other relations that are considered immediate family member will be considered on a case by case basis e.g. guardianship  Applications that are sent electronically using IRS systems will not be considered.

STIPULATIONS FOR USE OF THE SCHOLARSHIP 1.The scholarship may be used for tuition and books at an accredited institution only. Payment may be made directly to the school which allows qualified expenses to be charged against it or to recipient upon submission of itemized receipts to the Scholarship Committee. In the event expenses are submitted for only part of the scholarship amount, AIM-IRS will retain the remaining amount until additional receipts are submitted for payment. If any funds from a scholarship award remain unclaimed after one (1) year, the funds will be returned to the general scholarship fund. 2.The National Board of Directors reserves the right to approve or disapprove any application for this scholarship 3.AIM-IRS.org reserves the right to publish, post to our website or include in our documentations any essays or statements that are associated with the scholarship application. The applicant name may be included in published documents or the website The information will be used only to demonstrate the organization involvement in the community. STIPULATIONS
