Workshop “Vacuum systems of Synchrotron Light Sources“ organized by MAX-LAB & ALBA Barcelona, th September 2005 Instrumentation and Vacuum Control

Workshop “Vacuum systems of Synchrotron Light Sources“ Barcelona, th September 2005 PROPOSED TOPICS: Daniela Schmied Instrumentation and vacuum control INSTRUMENTATION Total and partial pressure measurements  IP’s, RGA Temperature measurement  Thermocouples/PT100  dedicated for machine operation Interlock system  Protection of SR refer to UHV beam line operation VACUUM CONTROL Vacuum control requirements during machine operation and shutdown periods  general control system or independent control? Change of control philosophy  Porting more and more functionality to lowest level

Workshop “Vacuum systems of Synchrotron Light Sources“ Barcelona, th September 2005  absolutely necessary to remotely identify leaks  crosscheck IMG readings and identify better pressure burst  not used for interlock signals  improved maintenance possible ( open circuits, leakage currents ) Daniela Schmied Instrumentation and vacuum control INSTRUMENTATION Use of IP’s as pressure gauges ( IPPS leakage currents < 1microA ) Requires: individual power supplies and more effort to maintain and analyze

Workshop “Vacuum systems of Synchrotron Light Sources“ Barcelona,12-13 th September 2005 INSTRUMENTATION Use of RGA as trouble shooting tool – in case of problems Daniela Schmied Instrumentation and vacuum control First leak detection : nothing found RGA switched ON : traces of water Water leak on cooling circuit of Septum magnet chamber Complex installation, maintenance and interpretation – requires important man power. Compact systems ( complete electronic in tunnel ) should improve this situation.

Workshop “Vacuum systems of Synchrotron Light Sources“ Barcelona, th September 2005 INSTRUMENTATION Temperature measurement dedicated for machine operation. Daniela Schmied Instrumentation and vacuum control Penning current th2 th1 th4 th Bunch filling mode Interesting for new installations or exotic, complicated chambers to investigate impedance behavior in different machine filling modes or for high power absorbers. Sometimes only necessary during commissioning of new chambers. Flexible system – use of local intelligence to prevent expensive and complicated cabling which includes important maintenance.

Workshop “Vacuum systems of Synchrotron Light Sources“ Barcelona, th September 2005 Daniela Schmied Instrumentation and vacuum control INSTRUMENTATION Interlock system to protect SR vacuum also refer to UHV beam lines Independent from control system – extensive use of PLC – error tracing Common system for SR / FE and UHV beam line Based on total pressure measurements. Low trigger levels for gate valve closure with important hysteresis together with different differential pumping set-up can give a certain security refer to contamination. Partial pressure interlock possible? All interlock systems need a fair number of pneumatic gate valves to be effective.

Workshop “Vacuum systems of Synchrotron Light Sources“ Barcelona, th September 2005 Daniela Schmied Instrumentation and vacuum control VACUUM CONTROL requirements during machine operation and shutdown periods. Control and data acquisition of active vacuum equipment: IMG, Pirani, IP’s, RGA and thermocouples  integrated in general control system  Sharing common historical data base Downtime of many sub-systems control system not available  Power cuts / emergency stop buttons require restart of vacuum equipment. Bake out of complicated chambers (in-vacuum undulators, NEG coated ID chambers) require continuous survey but also enhanced security.  Mobile PLC unit to control, interlock and survey bake out processes NEG, Temperature, pressure gauges, RGA
