How-to-guide Why an applied research idea summary? When an idea of an applied research project is conceived it must be put on paper, summarizing its main points, in order to easily communicate them to 3 rd parties (investors or potential partners).

How-to-guide Technical issues, but also market and business issues. 2-5 pages Used also for the initial evaluation of a funding proposal in the frame of FP7.

Checklist OBJECTIVE: The Gate2Start Checklist aims at making researchers / research teams aware of issues they need to consider in order for their applied research hypothesis to be transformed into successful innovation. It is build around 3 major topics:  Technology  Market  Business issues.

Checklist How to use it:  A series of questions under each topic.  The researcher answers with a YES or NO.  It is used in parallel with the summary in order to ensure that the researcher has considered important issues involved before finalising the summary and in order for the later to be attractive to funding and potential partners.

Self Assessment Tool OBJECTIVE: To give the researcher the opportunity to check the integrity and maturity of the research idea as well as to receive feedback regarding issues that must be analysed in more depth in order to raise the success potential of the idea. Why self-assessment? Confidentiality issues involved in the evaluation of an idea, Pan-European use, Massive Use.

Self Assessment Tool How to use it?  Online Tool (within March).  Targeted questions with different importance. 3 categories: Technology, Market, Business Issues.  The researcher rates himself / herself in the scale of 0 to 4.  Used after the summary in order to evaluate it.  As a stand alone tool or as a discussion basis between researcher / research teams in order not only to raise awareness but also to question issues that need to be reconsidered and improved.  Comparative results per country, sector etc.

3 rd Stage Tools OBJECTIVE: To provide researchers with a list of existing, reliable tools created within the frame of successful initiatives and projects. The tools are used during a posterior stage from that the Gate2Start targets (after the proof of concept) for the creation of a Business Plan.

OBJECTIVE:  To provide coaching and consultation to researchers / organisations during one-to-one meetings with experts, in order to formulate the idea and maximise its success potential.  Pilot testing and validation of the Gate2Start tools so as to prepare researchers for the Networking Discussion Groups. What will the researcher gain?:  Introduction to investors, market and business experts’ requirements.  Improvement of the research idea.  Elaboration of the presentation of the research idea.  Assessment of the business and market potential of the idea.  Creation of a network of potential partners.
