Preliminary Research When you first begin your research project, you will probably go straight to Google and click on the first returned website. ENCARTA ABOUT.COM WIKIPEDIA ASK.COM Are these sites okay to find information about your topic? YES You need to know the basic information to wrap your mind around the general ideas.

BUT … The basic information needs to be cross-referenced with sites that are more reliable.

From Wikipedia This information seems important, but you will want to find some of the same information on a more credible website or database.

. org.edu.gov.com.net.edu Trusted site connected to an educational entity.gov trusted site that is connected to a branch of government.co.uk Trusted site that is connected to a branch of government (specific to the UK).org These websites are associated with a certain organization. Be careful that this information is presented in a credible way as well.. com These websites are okay, but need to be viewed with scrutiny. Check several websites to find the information in multiple different places. If the information only appears once, it may be false.
