January 11, 2014 ● Facilitator: Clyde W. Kunz, CFRE

 Read entire list of (374!) “values” statements  Identify (by underlining) the five you consider to best represent your personal values  Go through the list again, identifying (by circling) the five you consider to best represent the values of Amerind Clyde Kunz & Associates LLC

Established in 1937, the Amerind Foundation and Museum seeks to foster and promote knowledge and understanding of the Native Peoples of the Americas through research, education, and conservation. Clyde Kunz & Associates LLC

 Are my personal values aligned with the Amerind values we have identified?  Are our identified values “in sync” with the Amerind Mission?  How can we better incorporate the Amerind values in communications to our constituents? Clyde Kunz & Associates LLC

 Mission Statement: a concise summary of what the organization does  Vision Statement: an idea of how the world will be different if the organization is completely successful at fulfilling its Mission. Clyde Kunz & Associates LLC

My life circumstances changed in such a way that I was suddenly required to move to a remote village in the Nepal for several years, where I had no telephone, , or “snail mail” contact with anyone in the U.S. Upon my return to the U.S. in the fall of 2020 I visited the Amerind Foundation, and was extremely impressed to learn that…… Clyde Kunz & Associates LLC

 Governance, not Management  Decision-making by Consensus, not Decision by Hierarchy  Attitude of Stewardship, not Ownership Clyde Kunz & Associates LLC

 To appoint or remove the organization’s Director, including setting appropriate conditions of employment, compensation, and a process to support and assess job performance Clyde Kunz & Associates LLC

 To annually adopt a balanced budget and to assume fiduciary responsibility for the organization  To partner with the CEO in strategic long-range planning Clyde Kunz & Associates LLC

 To lend pro-bono professional expertise and other volunteer support as required in order to fulfill the organization’s mission  To serve actively as political and community advocates for the organization Clyde Kunz & Associates LLC

 To approve, periodically review, and accept responsibility for, all organizational policies Clyde Kunz & Associates LLC

 Financial / Audit / Investment  Fundraising  Marketing / Public Relations  Board Governance  Staffing / Volunteers  Program-related  Information Systems  Property / Maintenance Clyde Kunz & Associates LLC

 To approve, periodically review, and accept responsibility for, all organizational policies  To perpetuate Board membership by recruiting and training new members and developing future leadership  To periodically undertake assessments of the performance of the board itself Clyde Kunz & Associates LLC

 To institute and contribute financially toward a development program  To participate actively in the organization’s fund development program Clyde Kunz & Associates LLC

 Does each Amerind Board member have a job description?  If so, is each of the 9 “Responsibilities of Board Members” included in that job description? (If not, could they be used as a model for creating one?) Clyde Kunz & Associates LLC

 The world (and the nonprofit environment) is changing rapidly!  In which direction(s) do we go? Clyde Kunz & Associates LLC

 Political  Environmental Clyde Kunz & Associates LLC

 Economic  Technological  Social Clyde Kunz & Associates LLC

 Select a spokesperson, then think about the “change driver” you have been assigned  Using “brain-storming” make a list of all the possible directions that change driver might take society in the next 5-10 years  Discuss your list and determine which 1 or 2 of the possible directions are most likely, and how they might affect the Amerind Foundation Clyde Kunz & Associates LLC

 Do you agree with each groups’ assessments?  If not, how else might the effects of the “change drivers” play out?  How does the Amerind prepare for those effects? Clyde Kunz & Associates LLC

 Recruitment & training of new Board members  Recruitment & retention of staff  Programs / Research / Scholarship  Advocacy  Fundraising and/or earned income  Marketing / public relations / public awareness  Finances & budgeting  Facilities / Collections Clyde Kunz & Associates LLC

 Simple numeric analysis (using 1-10 scale) of various Amerind activities and/or programs  Work in 4 groups  Discuss each line item for the columns your group has been assigned. Using a numeric scale of 1-10, come to a consensus as to what numeric score each should receive. Clyde Kunz & Associates LLC

 What might this exercise indicate about the “weight” of various programs?  Which of Amerind’s efforts should receive the most attention?  How does identifying those areas of focus impact the hiring of a new Director? Clyde Kunz & Associates LLC

Thank You! Clyde W. Kunz, CFRE ● (520) ●
