The Reading of the Word of God Nehemiah 8 The Reading of the Word of God Textual study of Nehemiah 8. Outline based in part on lesson appearing on Garyslist in December 1995, by Alan Cole Preached at West Side on Sunday AM, May 16, 2010 Print Slides: 3,12,14,17,24,27

Context of Nehemiah 8 Return of remnant to Jerusalem following Babylonian captivity Nehemiah 1-7 (Reconstruction of Jerusalem, led by Nehemiah) Nehemiah 8-14 (Restoration of the people, led by Nehemiah and Ezra) Nehemiah 8 – The reading of the law in the presence of the people

The Word Requested by the People – (1-2) Now all the people gathered together as one man in the open square that was in front of the Water Gate; and they told Ezra the scribe to bring the Book of the Law of Moses, which the LORD had commanded Israel. 2 So Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly of men and women and all who could hear with understanding on the first day of the seventh month.

Unity Shown by the People Unity of Mind – “all the people gathered together as one man” (cf. Acts 13:42-52. The Gentiles in Antioch of Pisidia)

Acts 13:44-46 On the next Sabbath almost the whole city came together to hear the word of God. 45 But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy; and contradicting and blaspheming, they opposed the things spoken by Paul. 46 Then Paul and Barnabas grew bold and said, "It was necessary that the word of God should be spoken to you first; but since you reject it, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, behold, we turn to the Gentiles.

Unity Shown by the People Unity of Mind – “all the people gathered together as one man” (cf. Acts 13:42-52. The Gentiles in Antioch of Pisidia) Unity of Desire – “they told Ezra the scribe to bring the Book” (cf. Matthew 5:6)

Matthew 5:6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled.

Unity Shown by the People Unity of Mind – “all the people gathered together as one man” (cf. Acts 13:42-52. The Gentiles in Antioch of Pisidia) Unity of Desire – “they told Ezra the scribe to bring the Book” (cf. Matthew 5:6) Unity of Purpose – “Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly” (The people wanted to hear, and Ezra wanted to teach, cf. Romans 1:15)

Romans 1:15 So, as much as is in me, I am ready to preach the gospel to you who are in Rome also.

The Word of God was Read – (3) Then he read from it in the open square that was in front of the Water Gate from morning until midday, before the men and women and those who could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive to the Book of the Law. The People Were: Unashamed (cf. Romans 1:16)

Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.

The Word of God was Read – (3) Then he read from it in the open square that was in front of the Water Gate from morning until midday, before the men and women and those who could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive to the Book of the Law. The People Were: Unashamed (cf. Romans 1:16) Attentive to the Word (cf. Acts 20:7)

Acts 20:7 Now on the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul, ready to depart the next day, spoke to them and continued his message until midnight. Avg. adult attention span (21 minutes) Eutychus fell asleep during Paul’s address

The Word of God was Respected – (4-8) So Ezra the scribe stood on a platform of wood which they had made for the purpose... 5 And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people, for he was standing above all the people; and when he opened it, all the people stood up. 6 And Ezra blessed the LORD, the great God. Then all the people answered, “Amen, Amen!” while lifting up their hands. And they bowed their heads and worshiped the LORD with their faces to the ground. 7 Also Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodijah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, helped the people to understand the Law; and the people stood in their place. 8 So they read distinctly from the book, in the Law of God; and they gave the sense, and helped them to understand the reading.

Respect for the Word of God The book was opened (vs. 5) The people stood up (vs. 5) The God of Heaven was worshipped (vs. 6) The proper meaning of the words of God were explained to the people (vs. 8) (cf. 2 Timothy 2:15)

2 Timothy 2:15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

The Reading of the Word of God Brought Positive Results – (9-10) And Nehemiah, who was the governor, Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who taught the people said to all the people, “This day is holy to the LORD your God; do not mourn nor weep.” For all the people wept, when they heard the words of the Law. 10 Then he said to them, “Go your way, eat the fat, drink the sweet, and send portions to those for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy to our LORD. Do not sorrow, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.”

A proper Response to God’s Word Reading the word of God convicts the honest heart of sin (Acts 2:36-37)

Acts 2:36-37 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ. 37 Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?”

A proper Response to God’s Word Reading the word of God convicts the honest heart of sin (Acts 2:36-37) Believing the word of God leads directly to repentance (2 Corinthians 7:8-10)

2 Corinthians 7:8-10 For even if I made you sorry with my letter, I do not regret it; though I did regret it. For I perceive that the same epistle made you sorry, though only for a while. 9 Now I rejoice, not that you were made sorry, but that your sorrow led to repentance. For you were made sorry in a godly manner, that you might suffer loss from us in nothing. 10 For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death.

A proper Response to God’s Word Reading the word of God convicts the honest heart of sin (Acts 2:36-37) Believing the word of God leads directly to repentance (2 Corinthians 7:8-10) Obeying the word of God leads to Joy! (Acts 8:36-39)

Acts 8:36-39 Now as they went down the road, they came to some water. And the eunuch said, “See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized?” 37 Then Philip said, “If you believe with all your heart, you may.” And he answered and said, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.” 38 So he commanded the chariot to stand still. And both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized him. 39 Now when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught Philip away, so that the eunuch saw him no more; and he went on his way rejoicing.

The Word of God was re-Read – (10-13) Then he said to them, “Go your way, eat the fat, drink the sweet, and send portions to those for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy to our LORD. Do not sorrow, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.” 11 So the Levites quieted all the people, saying, “Be still, for the day is holy; do not be grieved.” 12 And all the people went their way to eat and drink, to send portions and rejoice greatly, because they understood the words that were declared to them. 13 Now on the second day the heads of the fathers' houses of all the people, with the priests and Levites, were gathered to Ezra the scribe, in order to understand the words of the Law.

Ephesians 6:4 And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord. Notice that it was those in a position of leadership that returned the next day to hear the words of God. Fathers are to “lead” their families!

2 Timothy 2:15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. As an evangelist, Timothy was to study diligently. Elders must have the ability from the word to “convict the gainsayer” (cf. Titus 1:9) “holding fast the faithful word as he has been taught”

Conclusion Strong Christians are those who are strong in knowledge. congregations are those faithful to God’s Word!
