Ch 19.1 Notes Circulatory System

Go with the Flow! What is the circulatory system? Includes 2 Systems 1.Cardiovascular system 2.Lymphatic system. Both systems move fluids around the body and protect it from disease.

Heart = 4 chambered muscular pump Blood = clear fluid (plasma) that carries blood cells, platelets, nutrients, and gases ( O 2 and CO 2) through the body Blood vessels = arteries, veins, capillaries carry blood through body The cardiovascular system is a closed- loop system. Cardiovascular system

Group of organs and tissues -collect fluid that leaks from blood …called Lymph… and returns it to the blood Lymph vessels have 1-way valves to keep lymph from flowing backwards The lymphatic system is an open- loop system Lymphatic system

How do the systems work together? As the heart pumps, fluid leaks out through capillaries Lymph capillaries absorb the extra fluid not reabsorbed by the capillaries

Turn to your partner and review – 3 minutes - Which two systems make up the circulatory system? List and Describe the key parts to each system. How do these two systems work together? What do veins and lymph vessels have in common? What is meant by a “closed-loop” and “open-loop” system?

O2O2 O2O2 Septum = muscular wall that separates the left and right sides of the heart. Why is that important? Right side of the heart pumps oxygen- poor blood to the lungs. Left side of the heart pumps oxygen- rich blood to the body. The Heart of the Matter

Think!! Review with your partner! How many chambers are in the heart? Name them! Which side of the heart handles oxygen poor blood? Oxygen rich? What is the importance of the septum?

2 upper chambers of the heart  Right atrium  Left atrium Chambers in Heart RALA RV 2 lower chambers Right Ventricle Left Ventricle LV

Blood Vessel Artery moves blood AWAY from the heart under high pressure - thick walls

Blood Vessel Vein moves blood TOWARDS the heart 1 –way valves keep blood from flowing backwards

Blood Vessel Capillaries  SMALLEST blood vessels… connect arteries and veins  Allows exchanges between body cells and blood!

Let’s review the three types of blood vessels! An artery … carries blood … A capillary … smallest blood vessel that … A vein … carries blood … Think! Turn to your partner and review

1.________system-blood flow within tissues of heart 2. _________ Circulation - blood flow through the heart to the lungs and back to heart 3. ________ Circulation – blood flow from the heart to the body and back to the body (except the lungs) Coronary Pulmonary Systemic Circulatory System – divided into 3 sections

Circulatory Song… sit back and enjoy 1MC1hcE

Functions of Blood 1.Carries _______ from your lungs to your body cells and carries_____________ as waste from your cells to your lungs to be exhaled. 2.Carries ____________ from your cells to your kidneys to be removed. 3.Transports ________ to your body’s cells. 4.Fight ________ and heal wounds. oxygen waste products nutrients infections carbon dioxide

Parts of Blood 1.Plasma - _________ part of blood a._________, minerals, and oxygen are dissolved in plasma b.Carries wastes from __________ 2. _______________ supply your body with oxygen. a. Contain ___________ - chemical that can carry O 2 and CO 2 3.Life span is _____ days, and they are rapidly replaced 4. ______________ fight pathogens 5. ____________ - cell fragments that help clot blood. Clear liquid Nutrients cells Red blood cells hemoglobin 120 White blood cells Platelets

Review Questions for Ch 19 1.The _______carries blood back to the heart. 2.The ___________ transports tissue fluid through a network of vessels. 3._______ is the chemical in red blood cells that picks up oxygen molecules. 4.___________ are cell fragments that help clot blood. 5.The smallest blood vessels are called ________. 6.The flow of blood to an from the lungs is called _________________. 7.______________ helps protect your body against infection. 8.The largest section of the circulatory system is the_______ 9._________ are blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart. 10.The two lower chambers of the heart are called the left and right __________, and the upper chambers are called _______.

Review Questions continued 11. Where does the exchange of food, oxygen, and wastes occur in the circulatory system? 12. Where does oxygen rich blood enter first? 13. What is circulation to all parts of the body called? 14. What is the main function of blood? 16. Which cell in the blood fights infection? 17. Which cell in the blood is responsible for carrying oxygen? 18. What is required to clot blood? 19. What is the general function of the lymph system?
