Stockholm’s sea traffic The Old Town of Stockholm was founded in mid-13 th century. Stockholm became very important market town. There were three different seaports in the area of Stockholm between Kogghamn was a seaport in the east of the Old Town, what was used as a international port. The goods what were brought via Kogghamn were for example, salt, spices, oil, beer, wine, pottery, precious fabrics and clothing. 2. Kornhamn was a seaport in the west of the Old Town, what was used as a internal port for the Sweden’s biggest lake, Mälaren. Almost all of the goods what were transported through Kornhamn were barley. 3.A little further north from the city of Holmen was also “The common bridge”. It was very important seaport because of its fish market. People from archipelago brought fish there.

Stockholm’s sea traffic At the year 1618–1648 there was a war called “The Thirty Year War” between Protestants and Catholics. In that point Sweden was also at its most powerful age ever. Sweden controlled a large area around the Baltic Sea. They became rich when people came to sell stuff to Sweden because they had to pay toll fees to sell their stuff. At 17 th century Sweden dominated many trades by sea. At 1723 Sweden had only 100 ships coming to Sweden and at 1800 Sweden had 685 ships there. That is a 40% increase and that’s how they earned money.

Stockholm’s sea traffic At the beginning of the 20 th century the city made a great growth by around people. The great growth resulted in a big need of residences’. Some of the first skyscrapers of Stockholm When people were able to travel long distances they could open supermarkets with exotic food. The first supermarket in Stockholm from 1946 “Stockholms frihamn”. - A port for cargo. In 1904, the “La-Plata” line to Argentina opened. In 1966 “Värtahamnen” opened for Viking line and Silja line to Helsinki.

The Warship Vasa The ship sank and was preserved under the water so they lift it up 333 years after. Now the Vasa ship is in the Vasa museum. And the museum is now the most popular museum in Sweden. Every year the Vasa museum gets over 1 million visitors Vasa was the most powerful warship in the world in the 17 th century. Because she had two cannon decks. It took almost two years ( ) to build Vasa. The king Gustav || Adolf, visited the shipyard to inspect the work. On its maiden voyage it sank outside Stockholm because it had too many cannons and the ship was too heavy.

Fishing Because Sweden is surrounded by seas and in Sweden there are many lakes, so fishing is a big hobby for many. In Sweden you need a license to fish in some parts of the sea or in some lakes. If you don’t have a license the sea police have the right to take your fishing gear. In winter time many enjoy ice fishing, first you drill a hole in the ice and then you just wait for a fish. Usually they just get small fish but sometimes you can get lucky and catch a big fish. In the city center of Stockholm you can fish salmon. And this fish was caught outside the opera house, it was weight 10.7 kg.

Swedish Seafood Surströmming is a Swedish dish consisting of fermented herring. Herring is sold in cans, when opened the contents release a strong and terrible smell. This is why the dish is always eaten outdoors. A Japanese study has shown that the smell of a newly opened can of surströmming is the most putrid smell of food in the world. Every august in Sweden people have a crayfish party. Then all friends and family come together to party and eat crayfish and shrimps. At the party everyone is wearing silly hats and napkins. Here you can see our students have a crayfish party.

Rowing Women Between the 15 th century and the 19 th century there was rowing women who row people between islands in Stockholm. Women row because their men had died and they needed money. In 1856 there were 96 rowing boats run by women and could transport people at the time. Later steam boats took over the business from women.
