The Epistles of Paul 1 & 2 Thessalonians 1 & 2 Timothy Deacon Norm Fr. Ed
1 Thessalonians Written about 50 A.D. One of the earliest letters giving us an insight into the very early Church. Paul’s stay in Thessalonica cut short by his persecutors.
Problems included remaining being faithful to his teaching; excessive anticipation of the Parousia.
Ch 1, 2Greeting, prayer, recalling his ministry and demeanor among them; accolades for them. Ch 3Timothy sends good news about their faith and love. Ch 4:3-12Holiness, mutual charity Ch 4:13-18The Thessalonians concern for their deceased loved ones. The “Rapture” (also ref Mt 24:36-44).
Ch 5:1-11Vigilance Ch 5:12-22Final words
2 Thessalonians Addressed to the same church as 1 Thessalonians. More impersonal and responds to changes in Thessalonica.
Ch 1:3-10 Usual greeting and prayer. Praise for the example of faith they give. Makes mention of the persecution they are undergoing Ch 2:1-5Concerned with a supposed letter from Paul that the “Day of the Lord”, the Parousia, has already come.
