Six Project Management Truths

1. Define the Project Identify the desired results Put a “fence” around the project Prototypes are excellent ways to: –Size a project without spending a lot of money; –Ensure that everyone knows the project’s size; –Make inexpensive mistakes.

2. Get a Contract Defines the scope of a project Prevents project “creep” Needed even for in-house projects

3. Communication is Critical Communicate with all parties, including: –Customer –Developers –Management Leave a paper trail for all to follow

4. Clarify the Content Ensure technical aspects are clear –Use diagrams –Use plain English (or whatever language the customer will understand) Features, navigation, eCommerce, scalability, localization

5. Deadlines are Your Friend Verifiable milestones Development occurs in stages Breakdown the project and plot it out on a calendar Verify that all parties are on track at each milestone Allow for slippage

6. Consider Compensation Tie it to deliverables Fixed bid versus time and materials Provide incentives for early delivery (if applicable) Provide incentives for quality
