Weather: Lesson 26 Precipitation Expectations: 1. Listen carefully 2. Work hard 3. Be responsible

Review: Meteorologists use a wind vane, anemometer, and barometer to learn about the weather and to try to predict future weather. High air pressure means sun and low air pressure means clouds and possibly precipitation. Wind direction and speed can also tell us about the weather to come.

When and why would we use this? What can come from the sky? From clouds? Anytime water falls from clouds that is called precipitation. Can you think of different forms of precipitation? How could meteorologists record how much precipitation falls?

Types of precipitation: Rain-liquid water falls to earth (Freezing rain) Sleet- mixture of snow and rain Snow- frozen water crystals Hail- balls of ice/ frozen water crystals

Rain Gauge: R0 Tool used to measure the amount of rain in a location. Can help predict flooding or drought and how well crops might do.

Observe types of precipitation: Snow Hail Sleet

Let's compare rainfall: Wilmington, NC Belmopan, Belize Kajang, Malaysia Do you think one will get more rain in an average day in January? Which month do you think each place gets the most rain?

Comparing rainfall: (Document camera)

The numbers: Wilmington, North Carolina, U.S.A Gets mm (57.7in) of rain each year. September is the rainiest month. Belmopan, Belize Gets mm (31.44in) of rain each year. September is the rainiest month. Kajang, Malaysia Gets mm (94.6 in) of rain each year. November is the rainiest month. (data from theweatherchannel.com)

Assignment: Review the types of precipitation: kids/0114-precipitation-types.php
