DISCUSSION BOARDS Discussion boards are a way for us as a class to talk about the week’s course material in a collegial way. Initial posts should have good substance and answer the questions asked in the Discussion Board topic. You should also respond to other students’ posts in a professional manner that moves the conversation forward. To Achieve the Best Grade on Your Discussion Boards: -Post to the DB at least 3 days during the unit -Respond to the posts of at least 3 other students -Submit posts that are thoughtful, original, and that give good evaluation of the content. -Submit posts that are free of spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors. -Do not use “text type” (LOL, etc.)

ASSIGNMENTS AND GRADING RUBRICS Unit 1 Assignment (Due 9/25) – Fire Service Interest Essay Unit 4 Assignment (Due 10/16) – Career Options Assignment Unit 5 Assignment (Due 10/23) – Historical Events Essay Unit 6 Assignment (Due 10/30) – Final Project Proposal Unit 7 Assignment (Due 11/6) – Future Goals Essay Unit 9 Assignment (Due 11/20) – Final Project Due

ASSIGNMENTS AND GRADING RUBRICS Assignments are graded using rubrics established by the University. Meeting the requirements of the assignment will ensure the best possible grade. -Follow descriptions as provided in the course -Provide factually accurate information based on the textbook as well as reliable outside sources -Meet length requirements as described within the project description -Properly credit sources used -Follow basic standards for college-level (proper grammar, spelling, and organization) -Submit by the deadline

DUE DATES AND PENALTIES FOR LATE WORK Assignments, Quizzes, Discussion Board Posts, and Makeup Seminar Assignments are due by the end of the unit (Tuesdays by 11:59 PM). Late work will be penalized 5% per week. Late work will not be accepted more than 3 weeks past the due date. A zero will be entered into the grade book in these instances. Discussion Boards have no late allowances. Failure to post in a unit will be scored as a zero. I understand that things come up from time to time. The best way to handle situations is to contact me as early as possible.

FINAL ASSIGNMENT For your final assignment, you will select a fire service professional (with rank) to interview. Begin thinking now about who you would like to interview. We will be discussing this assignment in more detail next week.

FIRE DEPARTMENT RESOURCES This week’s reading introduces organizations and functions that assist fire and emergency services organizations in meeting their mission. It is important to have a working knowledge of these organizations and the services that they provide. It is also important to understand the acronyms of these organizations because they are used frequently in the fire service and may be confusing at first.
