IP Open Forum & IP Sessions for Design Classes Planning Started: Oct Implemented: March 2015 Assessment: April 2015 Program Layout Monday IP Session for BME2300, Engineering Design class IP Open Forum: Ask the Expert Tuesday IP Session for BME4602, Capstone Design Class IP Session for ME4182, Capstone Design class.

Results & Feedback Total participants:270 Response rate:67.5% Average rating (excellent or above average): 92% Would you like to attend this kind of session in the future? Yes (all sessions)85% Yes (Open Forum) 100%

Learning Outcome What did you learn from this session? Distinction between patent, trademark, copyright and trade secrets Basic knowledge and procedure to file a patent Legal issues that might arise Provisional vs. utility (non-provisional) patent application Anatomy of a patent claim We had a PTRC A whole field of study I never considered I hold copyright. Relationship between legislation and the superior court with regards to intellectual property The patent filing process is quite thorough and rigorous so it is very important to have a rock solid filing, verbiage, and claims Details on how to write and submit patent applications A deeper understanding of the patent process, what it is actually patentable and the benefits and reasons to pursue intellectual property. I especially benefited from learning about PCT process.

Comments & Suggestions Very useful stuff Overall, very engaging and informative with great visuals All my questions were answered, and more! I really enjoyed the lecture. Makes me feel more at ease about potentially applying for a patent in the future Focus more for engineering process Taylor more to biological applications Another session which goes through writing a patent More info. On IP process at the institution Better advertising events like this

Next Step: In Planning Stage IP Clinic in Fall 2015, inviting campus IP experts Expanded IP outreach events in Spring 2016 Reach out to many other engineering departments/classes, as well as students in sciences, architecture, public policy, and business, etc. Organize department/college wide IP open forums Collaborate with other local/area universities
