How Lancaster Settled… Lancaster county was originally a part of the land given to William Penn in 1681 for the state of Pennsylvania, but it was not until later that it was created. Lancaster broke apart from Chester county in 1729 to become it’s own county.

Likes and Dislikes Likes: New Holland has very little noise and keeps it calm and quiet. There is not a big population which allows open roads with limited traffic. I like amount of space given compared to the packed city. Dislikes: I don’t like the smell from farms. I dislike how far away some of the stores are. I dislike the weather pattern in my environment because it changes every season.

Weather Patterns In Lancaster the Weather changes throughout the four seasons. Every season has rain but spring often has the most rain, with an average rainfall of 10 inches. From June through August we have an occasional summer thunderstorm. On average there is a moderate amount of rain or snow, depending on the temperature, between December to March. Throughout the year, it is mostly sunny and the temperature has an average of 22°F to 85°F.

New Holland Watershed The watershed that is used in New Holland is the Conestoga River. From the Conestoga River it is connecting to the Susquehanna River. When people litter or dump things into the streams or lakes it can be hurtful to the water. Also, when farmers use toxic fertilizers it is harmful. To keep the water clean people can help by conserving water. If we don’t conserve our water there will be less water making it easier to get polluted. We can also help by using Natural products that are safe and wont hurt the water.

-In my environment, there are different types of Native plants such as Oak trees, Hydrangeas, and poison ivy. - Where I live the most common birds are Robins, Blue Jays, and Woodpeckers. - Common mammal's are squirrel’s, chipmunks, and White-tailed deer. Native plants and Animals

Energy and Environment - In my environment there are different energy sources that are used such as solar energy, natural gasses, and coal energy. - There are not many problems in Lancaster but one of them is when chemicals are sprayed on the farmers crops which sometimes runs off into the streams or lakes, which is unhealthy for humans and animals. Interesting facts: Lancaster county is known to have very good soil. Also, President Abraham Lincoln addressed the residents of Lancaster from the balcony of the Heister House.

My Home and Life  The water at my house comes from the town of Blue Ball water supply.  The trash in my household is disposed by being picked up by the local trash disposal company which is taken to the local landfill.  At my house we recycle plastics and glass which gets picked up and taken to a local recycling facility.  The sewage goes through the sewage drain, to our local sewer plant holding tank, and then gets taken to a wastewater treatment plant to have solids and sludge removed. The remaining water gets purified and the water is returned to our water ways.  The habitats that organisms use around my house are pine trees that birds and squirrels use, dirt for the voles that live underground, and bushes.  My top five foods are peaches, which is grown in Pennsylvania, steak, which can also come from Pennsylvania, sushi, which comes from china, apples, which can be grown in Pennsylvania, and pizza, which comes from Italy. Recycling is one of the things I do that is environmentally friendly. Also, when I drink water I don’t use plastic water bottles. On the other hand, I take long showers which wastes a lot of water and I use a lot of paper. To be more environmentally friendly I can save more by using less.
