Presentation transcript:

R ainforests once covered 14% of the earth's land surface; now they cover only 6%.

One and one-half acres of rainforest are lost every second

Nearly half of the world's species of plants, animals and microorganisms will be destroyed or severely threatened over the next 25 years

Experts estimate that we are losing 137 plant, animal and insect species every single day due to rainforest deforestation. That equals about 50,000 species a year.

More than 20 percent of the world oxygen is produced in the Amazon Rainforest.

Experts estimate the remaining rainforests could be consumed in less than 40 yrs

1) What is the Amazon? 2) What is the Amazon Basin is named after? 3) Name 3 exotic species that are found in the Amazon 4) What is the greatest threat to the Amazon? 5) Identify 3 things people hope to get from cutting down the Amazon.
