Who are Raleigh International?

Raleigh International is a sustainable development charity. They challenge and inspire young volunteers from around the world to work with communities living in poverty.

What does Raleigh believe? The world is threatened by unsustainable ways of living Countries have the right to develop but need to innovate to do it sustainably By working together communities and young people are inspired to build a better future

Our Vision A global community working to build a sustainable future. Our Mission To drive sustainable development through inspiring young people to be the agents of change.

Where does Raleigh work?

Borneo

Why am I volunteering here? Borneo In Sabah and Sarawak almost 20% of the population live in poverty. Many rural communities lack access to basic infrastructure such as water and sanitation. Many are also lacking access to education. Borneo’s rainforest are threatened by logging and palm oil production.

What will I be doing? Raleigh International focuses on three project areas in Borneo Water, sanitation & hygiene, Community resilience, and Natural resource management

Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Raleigh seeks to improve the quality of water and sanitation services to improve the overall health of communities. I’ll be aiding communities to improve access to safe drinking water, and raising awareness about the importance of hygienic practices. This could involve building a clean water source, or running awareness sessions on hand hygiene.

Managing natural resources Raleigh supports communities to manage their natural resources. I’ll be working with communities to use their natural resources for food and sustainable incomes, as well as assisting in the protection of areas of biodiversity. This could involve building infrastructure in national parks or awareness raising on sustainable livelihoods.

Community resilience Raleigh works with rural communities to improve their resilience to economic, social and environmental challenges. I’ll be assisting to: Improve access to education and health services. Create sustainable ways of raising money Preparing for climate change This may involve building and education centres or promoting eco-tourism.

Youth Leadership World-wide young people make up almost 50% of the global population. Young people are often particularly vulnerable to the issues caused by poverty. Raleigh aims to inspire young people to take the lead in changing their world, developing young people’s skills and experience so that they can become active citizens. I’ll have the opportunity to lead my group and manage different parts of the project, giving me invaluable leadership experience.

Raleigh’s Impact “Mr Lami, the local project manager thanked everyone for their hard work in the completion of the project. He spoke of the years which had passed with no access to a clean water source and the effect this project would have on the people of this community. He highlighted in particular the impact this will have on the children of this village; to their health and to their future. It will bring prosperity back to the village and ensure they are sustainable long into the future.” From the Borneo blog, August 2014

What will I be doing for my fundraising? Fill this in with whatever you will be doing!

What can you do? Here put in whatever you are asking your audience to do, donate to your page, give you a donation, give you some fundraising support, come to your event etc…

Thank You! Any questions?
