Math 5 Read, write decimals to the thousandths Instructor: Mrs. Tew Turner

In this lesson you will learn about place value with decimals and the patterns that we find in the base 10 system.

1 Minute Math Warm-up! a) = b) = c) = d) = e) = f) = g) = h) =

Math Warm-up a) = 39 b) = 58 c) = 59 d) = 99 e) = 22 f) = 40 g) = 82 h) = 110

Decimal place value is very similar to whole number place value. Every number has a place to hold. However, decimals are numbers LESS than ONE WHOLE number otherwise known as a FRACTION.

All numbers that are decimals end with a “ths” to represent a number that is less than one or a fraction.

1 WholeTenths Hundredths Thousandths

“AND”: How you SAY the DECIMAL POINT. Decimal numbers always represent LESS THAN ONE!

Let’s Practice reading decimal numbers! 1)1.982 You say, “One AND Nine hundred eighty two thousand ths.”

Let’s Practice reading decimal numbers! 2) You say, “Four hundred fifty six AND three hundred sixty seven thousand ths.”

Let’s Practice reading decimal numbers! 3) 4, You say, “Four thousand, six hundred eighty seven and ninety seven hundred ths.”

Now lets work on recognizing and saying these numbers. Why are they less than one ? 0.3 = Three Tenths = this means you have 3 out of 10 items = 3/ = Four Hundredths = this means you have 4 out of 100 items = 4/100

Draw The symbol for ONES, Tenths, Hundredths, & Thousandths. Make a chart like this in your notebook

Let’s look at an example: Thousands Hundreds Ones Decimal Tenths Hundredths Thousandths Let’s read this number together.

Now let’s Practice We will look at the number, say the number, then say the fraction. 0.45Forty-five HUNDREDTHS45/ Seven HUNDREDTHS7/ Nine TENTHS9/10
