I Corinthians 13:1-8 Word study of makrothumeō – 1.Related to Faith-Rest. Heb. 6:12 & Related to objectivity & justice (taking time to hear the facts – i.e., both sides of the story!). Acts 26:3 (vs. 1…). 3.Related to forgiveness. Matt. 18:26, 29 (vs ). 4.Related to persistent prayer. Lk. 18:7 (cf. II Cor. 1:3, 4). 5.It is God’s attitude toward unbelievers & reversionistic (backsliding) believers. Rom. 2:4 (vs. 1-16); II Pet. 3:9, 15; I Tim. 1:16 (vs. 15 & 16); Rom. 9:22. (It takes character to be able to withstand being scoffed at & despised!) 6.It is a fruit of the Spirit. Gal. 5:22; Eph. 4:2 (vs. 1-6). 7.It is a part of each believer’s ministry. II Cor. 6:6 (vs. 1-10). 8.It is commanded as a part of the Christian way of life. Col. 3:12 (vs. 5-17); I Thess. 5:14 (vs. 14 & 15). 9.It is to be done joyfully!! Col. 1:11 (vs. 9-12). 10.Longsuffering & the Pastor/Teacher. II Tim. 4:2 (vs. 1-5). 11.Longsuffering & times of apostasy. II Tim. 3:10 (vs. 1-13); Jms. 5:7, 8, 10 (vs. 1-11). 12.Longsuffering & the angelic conflict. I Pet. 3:20 (vs ). 13.Longsuffering is an integral part of the Love Complex. I Cor. 13:4.

I Corinthians 13:1-8 “Kind” – present middle indicative of chresteuomai – to be gentle, kind; a gracious attitude toward others; giving others the benefit of the doubt (cf. Eph. 4:32; Gal. 5:22).

I Corinthians 13:1-8 “Does not envy” (vs. 4) – present active indicative of zeloō – to be jealous; envious; spiteful; to be heated or to boil with envy, hatred, or anger. Envy is related to the attitude of those who felt that their gifts were inferior (12:14-17) – Love would have solved that problem. Spiteful – ill will with the disposition to irritate & annoy; bear grudges. Cf. Song of Solomon 8:6 Envy – a feeling of discontent or covetousness with regard to another’s advantages, success, possessions, etc. Emphasizes the importance of no mental attitude sins in our life.

I Corinthians 13:1-8 The demon of envy will lead to bitterness. Cf. Colossians 3:19 – “bitter” – present middle imperative of pikrainō – “stop being bitter” - to be embittered; to grow angry & harsh. See Hebrews 12:15.
