Gears By: Carol Jean Benjamin

Spur gear  Definition: Spur gears, also known as straight-cut gears, are the most simple type of gear. The have a cylinder or disk with teeth pointing outward. The edge of each tooth is straight and aligned parallel to the axis of rotation.  Example of the gear in use would be the movement of a machine arm.

Worm gear  A worm gear is usually with a spur gear or a helical gear, which is called the gear, wheel, or worm wheel. The worm and the gear sets are a way to achieve a high torque and low speed gear ratio. To find the distinction between a worm and a helical gear’ you must know whether it has at least one tooth for persisting for a full rotation around the helix. If this occurs, it is a worm; if not, it is a helical gear. A worm may have as few as one tooth. If that tooth persists for several turns around the helix, the worm will appear, superficially, to have more than one tooth, but what one in fact sees is the same tooth reappearing at intervals along the length of the worm  An example of it in use would be in automobiles.

Crown gear  Crown gears are a particular form of bevel gear; whose teeth point at right angles to the plane of the wheel. The teeth look like the points on a crown. A crown gear can only mesh accurately with another bevel gear, although crown gears are sometimes seen meshing with spur gears.  An example of a crown gear in use would be in mechanical clocks.

Rotary motion to linear motion  Rotary motion is the act of rotating as if on an axis and linear motion is the motion in which all parts of a system move in the same direction at the same speed.  Example of linear motion: a motorcyclist maintaining a motionless posture on a bike that moves in a straight line.  Example of rotary motion: a bicycle when the wheels turn round to push the bike forwards.
