IPST Centre of Excellence for EcoInformatics, NECTEC-WU Phuket Ratchabhat University Nakhonsithammarat Ratchabhat University Ban Raya Resort and Spa Self Defense and Conservation Koh Raya Virtual Site: Coral Reef Biomes 1

Virtual site mission 2 Provide information from the site from extended sensors, photos and videos. All the information packaged as a single pack that uses virtual technology to deliver the experience to students i.e. Google Earth. Future technology can be also used as 3D or panorama Quick Time. A sample of the use of this technology in a classroom is planned (lesson plan) as a so-called virtual field trip i.e. "Getting to know coral reef of Thailand, meets the folks out there", "Cloud Forest, the source of your clean water for life". VFT (our technology) will be built around the concept of inquiry based learning and GLOBE complete cycle where finally students prepare their presentations that can be used in a student conference.

What do we get from this virtual site? 3 Coral virtual website that students and teachers can access and download sensor data and pictures for their research. Monitoring changes of coral reef system at Koh Raya real time. Providing virtual video at coral reef site to help promoting marine-eco-tourism at Koh Raya. Providing sensor data to better coral reef conservation plan and management.

Thai students know so little about coral reef ecosystem 4

Go to coral reef ecosystem, students have to have good swimming and diving skills. 5

What equipments do we need? 6 B&W or Color camera probe (both Infra-red capable in low-light) Sea-Tail with Stainless Steel mounting hardware... and Upper/Lower Grommets for attaching additional weight or lines 150 feet Sea-Serpent Cable, custom fabricated 12 VDC cigarette-lighter power Adapter Cable spool 3/4" pole attachment 7" portable Monitor (B&W or Color, same as camera) Volt AC (50/60 Hz) power Adapter Larger Hard Carrying/Storage Case to hold all of the above

Virtual coral: new way for students to learn science in their classrooms. 7

Examples of Coral Data Overlaid on Google Earth 8

Example of GPS track Overlaid on Google Earth 9 Wichianmatu students went to Hai Islands to visit their coral study site.

Example of VDO clip: false clown anemonefish and anemone 10

11 Example of Sea Surface Temperature Data Analysis & Bleaching hotspots, DHW Sea Surface Temperature Coral Bleaching Hotspot Degree Heating Weeks Data visualization Koh Ngam Chumphon Coordinate: N E Metadata: Koh Ngam is a good diving spots in Chumphon. Download data
