The Great Potato Famine In 1845, a blight (disease) devastated Ireland’s potato crop, and it returned the next few years. The potato blight was not peculiar to Ireland; in fact, it began in North America. In the midst of the potato famine, corn, cattle, and dairy products continues to be produced in Ireland. But rather than give these foodstuffs to the starving, landlords sold them abroad for profits….The nation lost a third of its population during the famine - more than a million died from starvation or disease. At least another 1 3/4 million fled their native land - 8 in 10 bound for the United States, most of the rest for Canada.
