Nelson Mandela

Who is Nelson Mandela? Nelson Mandela was born in South Africa in 1918.

What was life like in South Africa? Until 1992, the government in South Africa ran an apartheid. This meant when black people have to live apart from white people. Most black people had no jobs, were very poor and could not vote because of this. Unfortunately white people treated black people badly.

Nelson wanted to help people in South Africa Nelson grew up in a small village called Mvezo and went away to study law when he was a young man. Nelson wanted to help free black people from being treated badly by white people.

What did Nelson do to help the people of South Africa? In 1944 he joined the African National Congress. ANC made protests about the Apartheid.

Mandela was sent to prison! In 1960 the government killed many black people for taking part in these protests. In 1963 Nelson was sent to prison for taking part in these protests.

What happened in the end? Happy ending?? In 1991 he became president of the ANC and encouraged the president of Africa to end apartheid. He won the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize for this and then became president of South Africa in 1994 . Finally, black people were allowed to vote for the first time.

HAPPY ENDING! He worked to bring peace to the country and to help black people. He retired in 1999 and now travels the world helping other countries solve their problems.

Martin Luther King

Who is Martin Luther King? Martin Luther King was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia

Early Life When Martin went to school, there were no white children. At that time, the law said that children with different skin colours could not go to the same school.

Martin Luther King had a dream...

His Dream... His dream was to make the lives of black people better because some were treated very badly. Martin did not want to get angry and fight. He wanted to change things in a peaceful way.

What did he do? Martin planned peaceful marches to help people be kinder and fairer to each other.

Famous Speech Martin gave a very famous speech in Washington where he talked about his hopes and dreams for the future. Thousands of people listened to him speak.

‘I have a dream that one day little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as brothers and sisters.’

A dream come true! Martin changed many people’s minds and thankfully new laws were made which made sure that black people’s lives were fairer. When Martin died people all over the world were very sad. In America, his life is celebrated on a special day called Martin Luther King day.

How does this link to the SEWA project? Martin Luther King changed many people’s lives for the better. He made our world a better way for the future. Martin Luther King spent his lives making our world a better place. We are asking you do to this for just one day.

Mahatma Gandhi

Who was Mahatma Gandhi? Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869 at Porbander, a small town on the western coast of India.

His Life... Gandhi studied hard and became a lawyer. He did a lot of his work in South Africa.

However he was sad... Gandhi didn‘t like how badly the white South Africans were treating Indians like himself and black Africans. He decided to do something about it.

What did he do? Gandhi didn‘t want to be angry or fight. He led non-violent protests to make sure that Indians and black Africans were treated fairly by the white people. After he had helped some of the people in South Africa get better treatment, he returned to India.

His beliefs... He and others believed India should have its freedom and get rid of the English rulers and their army. He taught his people to peacefully fight back at the English. He didn‘t want to hurt or kill anyone. Ghandi peacefully fought against English laws that were making Indian people’s lives difficult and unfair.

What happened in the end? After years and many more non-violent protests, Gandhi and his hundreds of thousands of freedom fighters peacefully forced the English to leave India and allow the Indians to run their own country. Gandhi always made sure this was done peacefully and no fighting ever took place.

How does this link to the SEWA project? Gandhi fought for what he believed in. He never gave up and was determined to make the world a better place for us to live in. Gandhi dedicated his life to making our world a better place. We are asking you do to this for just one day.
