Presidential Youth Fitness Program Training Healthful Living

Presidential Youth Fitness Program Comprehensive, school-based program that promotes health and regular physical activity Shift in assessing student fitness levels: President’s Challenge: 1966 ◦ Focused on performance in physical fitness tests (awards based on performance in comparison to other students) Presidential Youth Fitness Program: 2012 ◦ Focuses on overall student health and encourages improvement based upon student goal’s. ◦ Moved away from comparing peers to focusing on self

Topics included in the training The role of the Presidential Youth Fitness Program in a high-quality, physical education program The role of fitness assessment in quality physical education (with FITNESSGRAM) Strategies for integrating fitness education and assessment into your existing program (using the Physical Best training program) Motivational recognition: Inspiring active living Communication: What students, parents, and administrators need to know about the Presidential Youth Fitness Program

Why is fitness assessment training needed? Alignment with state standards Meets the required “approved fitness assessment” for grades 4-9 Survey data indicates need for teacher PD in fitness assessment Lack of consistency among schools Change in national fitness assessment from the President’s Challenge to Presidential Youth Fitness Program

Cost of the training and breakdown of that cost Cost includes: ◦ In-person, half day professional development ◦ Textbook ◦ Physical Education for Lifelong Fitness Teacher’s Guide ◦ Participant enrollment in on-line learning community Cost: ◦ Half-day workshop for 26 elementary teachers-$2000 ◦ Half-day workshop for 45 secondary teachers-$2000 ◦ Additional textbook cost for 15 secondary- $585 ($39.00 per person) Total cost for trainings=$4585

Request to the Board The Instructional Services Department is requesting approval for the funding of professional development in the Presidential Youth Fitness Program for all physical education teachers in New Hanover County Schools.
