Biochemistry………………Monomers and Polymers What is biochemistry? The study of chemical process within living things KEY POINT #1: A atom is the smallest unit of matter. The main atoms of life are: » Carbon » Hydrogen » Nitrogen » Oxygen » Phosphorus » Sulfur

KEY POINT #2: Many of the molecules in cells are so large that they are known as macromolecules.  MACROmolecule = Large molecule  Macromolecules are made from bonding of smaller molecules.  Macromolecules can also be called biomolecules or organic molecules.

KEY POINT #3: A macromolecule is a polymer that is formed when smaller units known as monomers join together. Monomer = 1 part Polymer =many parts

KEY POINT #4: The monomers that combine to make a polymer may be identical or different.  Monomers can be identical to each other such as links on a metal watch.  Monomers can be different like beads in a multicolored necklace.

KEY POINT #5: The 4 major groups of macromolecules found in living things are: A.Carbohydrates B.Proteins C.Nucleic Acid D.Lipids
