Nepal Church History - Gita Baraily Nepal is known as country of Mount Everest and Birth Place of Gautam Buddha Mt. Everest 8848 m Siddhartha Gautam Buddha born place Kapilabastu, Lumbini, Nepal.

Introduction of Nepal Nepal is situated between two large country China and India. Capital: Kathmandu Population: 27.1 million National Language: Nepali Religion: Hinduism 80.6%, Buddhism 10.7%, Islam 4.3%, Christianity 2%, Tribal religion 2.4%.

How Christianity came into Nepal Before democracy (1990), Nepal generally remained a closed land for the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Many Christian around the world prayed for Nepal. In the 16 th century the European Missionary or business man wanted to go to Tibet through Nepal. During 1628 A.D. Marks the first recorded date of any Christian in Kathmandu valley, Nepal. Father Joan Cabral, Jesuit priest of the south Tibet contact with king of Nepal. But that time there were not any mission work in Nepal. In 1661 King Pratap Malla provided the place for the missionary in Kathmandu. This was the first permission given by King.

The King invited Missionary The king did not invited missionary for their mission work and evangelism. But Missionary were asked to introduce and teach about the telescope and other mathematical instruments. In 21 st February 1707 two fathers, came and remained in Kathmandu but their sickness they went back to India. In 1715 the first mission work was established in the Kathmandu valley. As these missionaries began their main goal of preaching the gospel in Kathmandu, some of the Brahmins were offended they put missionaries into the prison for 4-5 months.

The king cast Out Missionary Middle of the 17 th century Prithivi Narayan Shaha became the king of Gorkha. This king united small kingdom into single Kingdom under his rule. The British government was coming stronger in India and the fear of Prithivi Narayan Shaha was one day British could come and capture Nepal. In 1769 he made three powerful cities into united and made single kingdom. And Nepal became only Hindu kingdom in the world. When he conquered Nepal he then expelled the priests and the group of Christian accusing them of being agents of European colonial power.

Dark Age of Nepal In 4 th February 1769 all the priests including 60 Nepali Christians got official permission to leave the country and they left under the Father Joseph Ravato. And they settled in the town of Bettia in Northern India. It was forbidden for any Christian, whether foreigners or nationals, to live in the country. Nepal became the closed Land for the Gospel of Jesus Christ for almost 221 years (AD ). This was the dark age of Christianity in Nepal.

The constant work of Mission God used his people to bring the Gospel even the door was closed by the Kings. The work was started as early as 1921 and the Nepalese going to work of these border-based missionaries, within the sort period of time few Nepali became a Christian. Church of Scotland: when the missionary open the school in Darjeeling, India in 1868 many Nepalese student were opportunity to schooling. Many student from Nepal received the Gospel and came to know Christ under their Bible studies.

Gorkha Mission The Nepali Christian in Darjeeling was inspired to form the Gorkha mission in the main objective of this mission were to preach the gospel inside Nepal. Ganga Prasad Pradhan, Nepali from Darjeeling, Sadhu Sundar Sigh from sikh family of Punjab, and Sadhuni Chandra Leela played the vital role to bring the Gospel in Nepal.

Open the Door for Mission In 1952 missionary got permission to open hospital in Pokhara. There was outstanding mission work regarding the medical area especially leprosy treatment was done. Many people accepted Christ by these mission works. In 1952 the first Protestant Church was established Ramghat, Pokhara.
