The Arab-Israeli Conflict

What is it all about? 2 Groups, Jews & Palestinian Arabs, claim the same land, Palestine, as their homeland.

The Jewish Argument -It’s the land God promised them. -Their Ancient Kingdom of Israel was located there. -Jerusalem was their ancient capital, The Western Wall is there. -They lived there until they were kicked out by the Romans.

The Palestinian Argument -They make up the majority of the people who live there. -They have lived there for many years without many Jews living there.

1947 UN Plan Divide Palestine into a Palestinian state & a Jewish state.

Who disagreed & why? The Arabs- They feel the plan is unfair to the Palestinians.

May 14, 1948 The Jews announce the creation of the Jewish State of Israel.

Results -The Arabs attack Israel on the next day, but Israel will win this war. -Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians are forced to relocate to other areas and live in refugee camps.

Situation for many Palestinians after 1967 The Palestinians living in the West Bank & Gaza Strip now found themselves under Israeli “Occupation” after the 6 Day War of 1967
