College/Life Advice

College classes Semester classes are shorter (more material in less time) Pay attention to the syllabus Prof and TA office hours If you miss class or an announcement…nobody cares to tell you what you missed

Miscellaneous college stuff is used A LOT more Buy your textbooks from half.com, amazon.com, or borrow from a friend DO NOT CHEAT --> kicked out of school Freshmen 15 (50)... it happens

Get off your ass and do something Lots of free food and events happen all the time. Intramural sports, gym, clubs, resume & interview workshops Your student fees pay for these Get a job (libraries, gyms, TAs) Opportunities arise from networking. In person! Talk to people. Do things

Freedom & Opportunities Keep your eyes open –Job fairs –Resume & interview workshops –Employer talks –Professional organizations Nobody will tell you what to do (no counselors) The sooner you start thinking/doing something, the farther ahead you will be than most people

More Employment Stuff Government Jobs – NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) – u/reu_search.jsphttp:// u/reu_search.jsp Watch for deadlines and apply to as many as you can Security clearance!

Have common sense. Don’t do anything stupid The world is judgemental. Things you do will be who you are to other people. Get over it. Don't let things hold you back.

After College Have a plan after you graduate –Major/minor in something that you can do something with –Graduate school? 35% in Arlington (CNN Money, 2006)CNN Money, 2006 M.A., M.S., M.E., Ph.D. J.D. (law school) M.D. (med school) M.B.A. (business school) Etc.
