Role of the WG on Semantics UCD: maintenance of the list of words –UCD-Doc (Rec) places this responsibility to a specific board (set-up in June) Semantics: define the IVOA standard vocabulary in the fields covered by IVOA activities (DM, Events, Theory, Registry..) Ontologies: explore what, how, why

UCDs: maintenance Proposed procedure:

Semantics: define the IVOA standard vocabulary What: –Define basic elements of a standard vocabulary: Concepts Instances Relationships (unavoidable step towards ontologies) syntax How: –Wg-chairs to syncronize needs/activities –Sub-wg (inter-wg) for each subject –Tools: Literature, thesauri (a.c.s.)

Ontologies: Start discussion on Ontology(ies) to gather info on: –what we want in an Ontology, –how many/what type we need, –what possible use they might have First-draft ontologies

Requests to EXEC: Formalize WG name: Semantics Endorse UCD maintenance procedure Vote on the UCD-List REC as soon as we have the updated doc. Create an Ontology List within the WG to gather info on –what we want in an O., –how many/what type we need, –what possible use they might have
