EDT 608 Unit 1 National University Ed Tech staff present An Approach to Technology Utilization in The classroom Prepared by Dr. George Beckwith National University

EDT 608 Unit 1 Setting the Stage for Educational Technology Use in the Classroom Why use Technology in the classroom? Promotes Meaningful Learning (Chapter 2, Grabe/Grabe) Allows use of Multiple Intelligences Required by California Standards for Teachers

EDT 608 Unit 1 Technology has changed our vocabulary: Remember when... A “window” was something you had to clean. A “RAM” was a male sheep. “Meg” was a girl’s first name. An “application” was for employment. A “program” was a TV show. A “cursor” used profanity. A “keyboard” was a piano. “Web” was a spider’s home and… “Memory” was something you lost with age.

EDT 608 Unit 1 Do you Believe that technology has had a significant impact on K-12 th grade education? % Yes No Yes & No Reference: Beckwith, E., Dissertation, March 2001, based on survey of 700 teachers

EDT 608 Unit 1 What, in your view, are the main obstacles that prevent the integration of technology into the classroom? % Reference: Beckwith, E., Dissertation, March 2001

EDT 608 Unit 1 % Factors that Influence and Limit the Use of Multimedia Technology in the Classroom The lack of adequate teacher training in technology is an obstacle to integrating multimedia technology applications into K-12 curricula Reference: Beckwith, E., Dissertation, March 2001

EDT 608 Unit 1 Proposed Educational Technology Approach Overview Change/enhance the current technology platform to deliver hypermedia/multimedia instruction to fully support student achievement and… to provide administrative support to staff and teachers.

EDT 608 Unit 1 Educators’ biggest challenge…

EDT 608 Unit 1 Moving the current “text” focused and overhead transparency based curriculum onto a hypermedia & multimedia oriented and internet based platform.

EDT 608 Unit 1 Software Applications for the Classroom There are thousands of educational software programs for schools. One basic software program that is found on most school computers is Microsoft Office which is comprised of three applications: –Word Processing (MS Word) –Spreadsheet (MS Excel) –Presentation (MS Power Point) MS Office and each of its three applications will be discussed and used in this course. One other software program that will be used in the course is Inspiration Software Inc.’s Inspiration which is used as a brainstorming and planning tool.
