Doug Silsbee and Bebe Cooper Capital Coaches Conference June 12, 2010 Introduction to Presence-Based Coaching

Commitments The fundamental act of leadership Produces a profile; the world acts on that profile  Internal breakdowns (habits, attachments, aversions)  External breakdowns Success requires corollary commitment:  Doing the inner work to be successful  Domain-specific competencies  Ontological competencies: Self-generation and resilience We work on ourselves in order to fulfill on commitments, and we make commitments in order to work on ourselves. Clients come to us with projects. Coaching is about the curriculum.

We Are Bodies Life shapes the organism (conditioning, identity, physical shape, habits, neurological defaults) The organism shapes our life (our structure of interpretation, actions we can imagine/take, capacities, flexibility) “The human body is incapable of not practicing” - RSH “We are what we have practiced; what we practice now is what we will become.” - GB Coaching, then, is a conversation in which we witness and wake up to the nature of this shaping, shift to access a greater range of possibilities, and practice ways of being relevant to our commitments.

Witness/ Wake Up “Catch the habit in the act”… in the present moment, which is the only time we can choose to change.  Offer an assessment  Create immediacy- connect what’s happening now with larger concerns  Reflect what is produced in us by our clients

Shift Help the client discover how to re-organize himself/herself in order to produce something new  Try on a new perspective/shape  Center in a possibility or commitment  Make internal processes explicit

Practice Help client learn to build the capacity for a sustainable new Way of Being  Design self-observations around a new behavior or action  Invite clients to take on generative practices  Create new “facts on the ground” that will demand a new response
