History Soccer, or football as it is known in most of the world, is thought to have begun around 200 BC. The Chinese played the game early on as a form of military training. Eskimos played aqsaqtuk, in which they played football with goals 10 miles apart. Soccer was introduced into the Olympic Games in Paris in 1900.

History (Cont.) Today soccer is one of the most popular sport for young girls and boys with over 1200 teams competing each year. There are 11 players on a team. The team that has scored more goals at the end of the game is the winner; if both teams have scored an equal number of goals then the game goes into a shootout.

Fun Facts Mia Hamm is the all-time leading international goal scorer for females. Just Fontaine, who scored 13 goals in the 1958 World Cup, still holds the record for the most goals. The United States Youth Soccer Association has more than 3 million members.

Fun Facts (Cont.) The United Soccer League was founded in 1986 to help players develop a higher level of play. Men’s Major League Soccer began in 1996.

Soccer Terms Dribbling: moving the soccer ball with your feet Header: striking the soccer ball with your head Striker: forwards whose main objective is to score goals Keeper: The goaltender Midfielder: responsible for keeping possession of the ball

Soccer Terms (Cont) Defender: responsible for preventing opponents from scoring Throw-in: When the ball goes out of bounds a player uses two hands to throw the ball overhead inbounds. Penalty Kick: free kick awarded to a team after they have been fouled by the other team.

Soccer Terms (Cont) Goal Kick: when a player kicks the ball past the goal line but not scoring the opposite team gets a goal kick from their goal crease Corner Kick: when a defensive player kicks the ball past the goal line the offense gets a kick from the corner of the offensive zone.

Soccer Terms (Cont) Offsides: When a player is behind the defense before the ball has passed Trapping: settling down of the ball without using ones hands Direct Kick: a penalty kick in which you can score

Soccer Terms (Cont) Indirect Kick: a penalty kick in which the ball must touch another player before you can score. Kick Off: to begin each period of play or after a goal by the opposing team.
