VOEvent Wrap-up Rob Seaman For Roy Williams IVOA InterOp, Trieste 23 May 2008

Many thanks To the Semantics working group for guidance with vocabularies (especially the Gray twins, Norman and Alasdair) To Alasdair Allan as HTN liaison To Roy – thanks for all the fish

Milestones – furious activity First VOEvent meeting in April 2005 Many (~ 18) meetings since First packets exchanged in June 2005 IVOA recommendation in November 2006 HTN 2005 VOEventNet (NSF) 2005 VO-GCN (NASA) 2007

Key v2.0 issues are: Embracing: Vocabularies semantically aware science Signatures data integrity / per stream DQA External schemata outside communities Time series the larger time domain Orbital elements the workflow Registry the VO vision Tweaks the real world

V2.0 will be backwards compatible v2.0 features anticipated during v1.0 roll-out v1.1 tweaks to track STC evolution, etc. v1.1 packets will remain legal under v2.0 Once VOEvent, always VOEvent? schema versioning easier than FITS but will attempt to avoid changes that require it

Vocabularies 1.5 sessions with Semantics WG Evolutionary framework for semantics No mods to VOEvent needed When new vocabulary is ready, just use explicitly Natural language remains an option

Signatures Wont include signature in No mods to VOEvent needed Will evaluate pilot projects (as demand provides) on transport based and envelope authentication

External schemata Already in use Heliophysics Knowledgebase A small change needed to schema Language may need tweaking

Time series WG discussed several variations (SDM) after Hotwired workshop in June 2007 Keep as simple as possible Can elaborate in later revisions This is most of the effort for v2.0 could slip to v2.1 if necessary

A time series is an aggregate object multiple instruments joint curation complex footprint in time and in space for moving objects requires matched calibrations associating detections –> objects

Orbital elements T00:00:00 STC gracefully describes orbits:

Alternate orbit representations STC provides options: orbital elements Pole and pericenter vectors RA, Decs at intervals Support one or all? Ask domain experts

Registering VOEvent assets VOEventStream coherent scientific entity VOEventService logistical clustering of functionality

Minor tweaks? Clarify general usage of references Explicit

Work products v2.0 standard (& schema) VOEvent vocabulary Registry schema for VOEvent Prototype signing technologies Notes: Transport User guide

Future events Finalize v2.0 by the Fall InterOp HTN coordination (HTN IV, July 2008) ADASS tutorial or BoF VOEvent IV (Spring 2009?) Other activities continue, e.g.: VO-GCN VOEventNet eSTAR
