Indigenous Tribe of South America

 The Uros tribe lives high in the Peru and Bolivia in the Andes and on Lake Titicaca on islands.  They were forced onto the islands when the Inca pushed them back off their territory.  The islands are floating on reeds the grow naturally and have to be replaced as they disintegrate.  Almost everything they use is made from these same reeds, including food, homes, and furniture.

 Because life on the islands is so hard, many have moved back to the mainland, leaving only a few hundred on the islands. The Uros tribe lives off hunting, fishing, and selling their beautiful handicrafts.  There are 42 of these self made islands. Each lasts about 30 years.  The Uros tribe lives off hunting, fishing, and selling their beautiful handicrafts.  There are around 2000 descendents of the Uros still alive today.

 The Uros Indians are known for their beautiful and intricate handwork, weaving, and embroidery.  Woven baskets and goods all made out of Totora reeds are highly demanded. Women also sell embroidered tapestries in several colors which are included in their national art objects. Men also contribute to the arts, by weaving small boats with animal faces (especially dragons) weaved on them and sell them.  Uros is also known for its special music and dances. There are more than 300 types of dances
