Pg. 24 A in your Notebook: What are some main causes of conflicts between groups of people. Make a list: Please do not talk at this timeMay 14

In the early 20 th century, European powers took over the lands of the Middle East that had once been ruled by the mighty (and mostly peaceful) Ottoman Empire. Europeans believed, like many Americans today, that they could do a better job of organizing the Middle East than the Ottomans had. They set about a plan of Nation Building to create new nations out of the religious and ethnic groups in the area. You will do the same thing.

Use the demographic data and the map to redraw the middle east into stable countries. Please follow the instructions with these changes: Your Justification and Explanation of Strength and Weaknesses will be on a separate piece of binder paper. You will not make a poster.

To consider: Make sure each country- –Has access to water –Has access to farmland –Has a city –Has access to a river or ocean for trade You should also respect/consider –Ethnicity –Religion –Population

Do the following… For each country that has access to a river or lake, put a + on the side of your paper. Put a minus for each of the countries that do not. For each country that has a City, and access to a river or ocean, put a + on the side of your paper. Put a minus for each of the countries that do not.

For each country that has access to farm land or grassland, put a + on the side of your paper. Put a minus for each of the countries that do not. For each country that has only one ethnic group, put a + on the side of your paper. Put a minus for each of the countries that do not. For each country that has only one religion, put a + on the side of your paper. Put a minus for each of the countries that do not.

Map questions… What problems did you face in trying to make these maps? Does this help explain to you some of the things going on in the Middle East today? How did the Ottoman Empire manage to control the same area with relatively little conflict?

Middle East Packet Read each section of the history of the Middle East and look at the cartoon below. Each cartoon is trying to illustrate what the reading is talking about. Label the cartoon to reflect the reading. You will need to think about the relationships described in the reading and the relationships you see in the drawing so you can match them up.

A. The Decline of the Ottoman Empire

Please do not talk at this timeMay 15 Get your packet from yesterday (front table) and look over the history of the interaction between the Middle East and the West. On a half sheet to turn in: –How would you characterize this interaction? –How would the people of the Middle East describe the Europeans and Americans they have dealt with? –How would Westerners describe the people of the Middle East?

Now trade packets with another team Write both your names clearly after the words Corrected by: on the front of this packet. Take turns making corrections as we go through each slide. Please make corrections and additions in pen.

B. WWI Peace Settlement Building pieces may not be labeled in this order and that is still ok.

E. The Partition of Syria and Lebanon

Pg. 26 A in your Notebook: Have you ever experienced a betrayal from someone your trusted? How did you feel afterward toward that person? Toward others? What would it take for you to trust that person again? What if this was not a matter of feelings, but one of survival? How would that change your answer? Please do not talk at this timeMay 18
