Dual Credit Training, English and Spanish June 7, 2001

Welcome to the English, Languages and Philosophy Department Our department consists of 19 full-time faculty, around 20 part-time faculty, and around 20 part-time / dual credit faculty. We offer English, Spanish, American Sign Language, French, Japanese, Portuguese, Philosophy, and Humanities courses. Currently, six classes are offered for dual credit: English 101, Spanish 101, Spanish 102, French 101, French 102, and English 175—Introduction to Literature. Starting in the fall of 2011, we will for the first time offer Sign Language 101 for dual credit at two Twin Falls High Schools.

General Procedures At the beginning of each school year, each dual credit instructor should contact either her or his assigned mentor or the chairperson of the department with the following information: 1.Which class(es) you anticipate offering for dual credit 2.The timeline for the class—year long, semester, or trimester 3.The anticipated number of students that will enroll 4.The placement method that will be used for those students—COMPASS, prerequisite completion, etc.

Syllabi At the beginning of each new teaching period you are required to submit a current copy of your syllabus to BOTH the department chair and your assigned mentor/contact person. Your syllabus must follow the CSI syllabus template; you can find that template here, under “Course Syllabus Guidelines.”

Syllabi, continued Your syllabus must contain the CSI catalog course description for the college class you are teaching. (You can access the catalog here: Your syllabus must list the departmental learning/course objectives. (You can find the departmental learning objectives for your course as part of the supplemental material available on this training site. Look at item number 2 in the document.) Your syllabus must contain the departmental outcomes assessment statement. Please confer with your mentor or contact person for this information.

Outcomes Assessment As most of you know, participation in the departmental outcomes assessment process is required. Each discipline has its own assessment procedure. English 101 students write an essay at the end of the semester; language students take a common final; literature instructors collect student assignments for a departmental review.
